  • Chains and sprockets.

Going to change the sprockets and chains in the mex ii. Does anyone know how much chain (in feet) I will need? From t20 to jack shaft #50. Jack shaft to center axles #60. And all the rest is #40. This will save me the time of measuring them all. Thanks guys

Chain usually comes in 10' lengths. I bought 4 boxes of #50 and 1 box of #60 and had some left over of each. The way they measure out leaves no choice but to have some extra. My Max II used only #50/#60 size chain. I shopped ebay for a month or so and got a sweet deal on some Whitney chain, I would stay away from the cheap stuff. I also bought a couple of extra master links just in case.

See the post here - it gives the counts of links :

You can get away with 3 boxes of #50 if you don't mind having one drive chain with two connector links in it. You will also need a splitter for the chains (get one that fits both 50 and 60) or you will spend some time grinding the links off. It is also helpful to have a small brass round punch to drive the split link out of the chain.

I just replaced mine - got the chains (Tsubaki) and splitter at Grainger - had to wait a day maybe two for some of the chain to arrive. Good service though.

Oh and you will need to be sure you have enough connector links. In the 10 foot boxes I got you only get one connector link so you will need to get an extra one of those and 2 or 3 extra for the 50 depending on how you do it. Grainger sells them in bags of 5. There is also something called a half link or offset link that you can use if your chains are too tight.

Thanks guys. I don't know if you guys knew This but you can buy master and half links at lowes. Just found out today. They sell them in the area where the nuts and bolts are. The ones you buy by the piece. The links will be in one of the drawers in that section. And they are real cheap too. Useless info until you break a keeper on a master link after 6pm and all the supply houses are closed. Like I did yesterday. Did not know lowes had them.
