  • Max IV 16HP expectations

    Hi,

I bought a 1997 Max IV a few months ago and I love it. However, I've never been around any AATV before, so I'm not sure what is considered normal in terms of power/handling, etc.

It has the 16 HP Briggs engine, and I am looking to upgrade it to a 23 HP Briggs when I can find one.

We have adjusted the drive belt and chains per the owners manual. My biggest concern right now is the difficulty steering. It has improved since adjustments were made, but still difficult. For example, it will usually not turn on level or uphill slope without forward momentum. Is this normal? Should I be able to turn from a standstill?

    Thanks,
    Bryan

When skid steering, the machine pivots on the center tire and slides the front and rear ones sideways. Depending on the terain, type tires. and horsepower, turning from a dead stop can be difficult, and can actually push a pile of dirt. A rolling tire won't do that. Try it in loose soil, it should be easy. 16 HP is on the low end, and a 23HP or even larger will improve things. Have you looked into the bandolero engines?
A red spring on your secondary clutch will help too, as will a new 1 1/4" wide belt. Your current belt could just be a little loose too. read this ATV and Snowmobile Belts - by Dayco

I bought a red spring from Recreatives a while back, but haven't installed it yet. I think I'll do that and see what improvement I get. I'll still be looking for an engine in the meantime. I'll check out the Bandoleros.

      Thanks for the info.
