    Hey slopeworken,

It sounds like you're well on your way to getting the Max going. The 23 horse Kohler should be more than enough to move that Max up/around/ and through anything. There are a few different clutches you can put on that engine. Powerblock and Comet (like a Comet 94C) are a couple of the top brands used. Is your clutch a 1" shaft or a 1 1/8" shaft? You can often find one on ebay that's used, but you may be better off calling up Recreatives to see if they can get you one for that engine. Remember that your driven clutch on the transmission is calibrated to use a two stroke engine, so if you put a 4-stroke in front of it, it may not perform as you expect it to. This little problem is very easily fixed by replacing the spring in the driven clutch. It's a cheap and easy job that should take 30 minutes or so. Recreatives has the spring you'll need as well.

Let us know how you make out on the clutch!

      shaft size

the shaft size is 1 7/16 x 4 1/4 straight shaft it does have a 3/8 key slot also so that is what my problem is need to find something that will work that doesn't have a tapper to it haven't never seen anything like that might need to pull the crank and turn it if possible the nice thing is it is big enough to do that. any help would be great

I have all kinds of brand new JLO parts I am trying to sell cheap. Listed in the classified section here. Let me know if you still want to fix that motor, I may have parts for you. I would like to make some room on my shelf. Anyway, you're best bet is to either have the crank machined to 1" with a 1/4" keyway or buy a 1" crank from a dealer and install it. You should be able to get the crank specs from Kohler, I would think. Run the stock Recreatives stuff. I've seen guys try other clutches (94c's and such) and it is tough to get the calibration right to run like a factory machine. Plus, I think you'll be looking a long long time for a 1 7/16" clutch for that motor.

Machined adapting couplers with keyway cut in them is what I used to make that similar setup work. Bought 1- 1 7/16" coupler and 1- 1" coupler welded them together put a piece of key way 1" to got to clutch and put it on. Used a drop or 2 of lock tight on the set screws and she held great. The clutch moved 1/2" farther away from the motor just took up the play with motor mounts moved same distance. I bought them at a surlus auto store called Princess auto. I think any farm supply or hydrolic place would have them. Cost me about $15 for the job. No machining cost saved a bunch, also new 1" crank for the Kohler is outrageous expensive. Used the same clutch I could not find a 1 7/16" clutch.
