I own a 1996, Max IV with a 18hp Vanguard engine. The current battery has the physical size of a garden tractor battery. It is 12 volt but I do not know the amperage. I am considering putting a 2 or 3 ton winch on. I am also considering putting a 12 volt, 500 or 800 amp deep cell marine battery in to power the winch and other electronics. Is the larger battery a good idea? Will the larger battery ruin the existing charging system?

hi
Depending on your frequency of use for the winch and other accesories ,the bigger battery will help but the weakest link will always be the charging system .
You will always need to charge battery when u r home to ensure it is 100 % b4 leaving
There are no promises if u do alot of winching that the existing charging will survive .

I put a std. size car battery in everything. A deep cycle is overkill. A sm. car battery will double your current capacity.
I tried to get by with the tiny one on the MaxII Bigfoot, only because the 40 horse has a large alternator. The problem I had with it was at 999cc the tiny one had trouble turning it over at times. In the maxII, you have the room to mount it beside the motor in the back. If you do that, raise it off the frame so the chain cannot slap the bottom of the battery and wear through.

Just install an alternator like I did on my first Max IV and I'm currently doing on my new Max IV and Max Buffalo and all your troubles solved. I installed a 40amp denso 1 wire alternator on my older Max IV actually pretty easy to do just have to fabricate a couple parts. I ran the headlights on it along with a set of 55watt halogen lights and a warn 2500lb winch at times and never had any issues.Attached Files
