  • terra tiger cone clutch springs..

i know there was some discussion on here before about the springs for the cone clutches for a terra tiger. I just cant find it. Anyone have an idea what is a good replacement for the springs for the drive that pushes the cones into the bells that have the clutch material on them? Mine seem good on terra tiger i just picked up but I want to go with little larger motor and was wondering if anyone has any ideas to help make sure the drive will hold up for a larger motor b4 i reassemble the drive....
    thanks,
    junior
If it don't have 6 wheels and floats.. isn't any good to me. Have you ever tried floating a 4 wheeler across a pond... Doesn't work very well does it?

The drive will NOT hold up to a larger motor. The TT had an option of a 18 horse JLO and that pushed the cone clutches to the limit. Allis Chalmers had a fix that was adding split washers to the shaft to effectively strengthen the spring. The problem is if the springs get too stiff they will push out on the side wall of the machine. Flexing the fiberglass.
Can you reinforce this area? Maybe add some square tubing? I'm sure your springs have weakened over time. When I had one apart I took it to my buddys engine shop. He has a spring compressor/tester and it measured around 170#. He also had a bucket of hi-performance chevy v-8 valve springs that were similar sized...they were 200+#. If you wanted to try it, that could be an idea.

thats actually was my main question... what is supposed to be the pressure of the springs? everythign ive read about them all depends on the pressure of the springs.. if u could reinforce a plate on body.. im gonna try it... I have extra set of clutches. 2 actually left over from a terra tiger i had couple years ago. that one i had a 440 polaris in it.. I drove that one all over the place never had an issue with it. I had a friend reline 3 sets of clutches for me didnt have a problem with 1st set for about 5 months till i wound up selling it. last i knew they still have it and use it. I drove that thing all over. guy i got it from said he replaced the springs in it when he had machine all apart replacing bearings. He only had the 295 in it but kept the motor. I just dont remember where he lived to ask him what he used for springs.

I would contact member kghills View Profile: kghills - 6x6 World to see if he has anything that would work. If he doesn't, I could ask my buddy if he has anything right now....but it would take a couple weeks cause he just left for Mexico this morning.

OK now I understand your question but just knowing a pressure is not enough info for me not being a TT man. What diameter are your springs? Do you know the installed height? Get me that info and I can see what I have around that might replace your springs with a little added pressure. If I had an original spring this would be much easier.

I asked farmtoybuilder since he has alot of experience with these terra tiger. He gave me a few ideas for springs heres what he came up with that has worked for him you can order either from Diamond Spring in Glenshaw PA 1-800-424-0500. The .250 spring has 604 # rate and won't use any washers! Part# DWC-25-NO-12 and 218 springs are 321# spring rate and are DWC-218NO-12. I slapped my 399cc rotax in mine yesterday to try out drivetrain before i put much money into it. Drove around all around my dads place held up good up hills down hills through the mud. Now to order the new springs and tear all apart and finish cleaning everythign up
