  • Trail boss transmission adjustment

Ive read a few post about adjusting the vesley transmisions. I have the "new" style with the pointers in the up position. I read that the pointers should point straight up at zero and move 5 degrees in each direction. My concern is that my pointers at zero point back at about a 5 to 8 degree angle. Should they be adjusted?

I have an original owners manual for the TB. I think I saw something in there about adjusting the trans. I can send a copy (at the very least it's good to have handy). Let me know an address.

I just read the manual... it's 5 degrees in both directions. Mine doesn't have the pointers, though.

Its weird. I read to loosen both adjusters up. at that point you should be able to move the arm 10 degrees in either direction. When I loosen mine up it doesnt move any further than when it was set befor. Seems to be working fine though so im just going to leave it. I was just doing an overall check while i had the top off it. Is that enclosure on your TB homemade or a factory setup?

It was made by a past owner... it looks like a boat bimini frame, with custom curtains. Zippered doors would be a good addition to this design!

Yea.. If it works I don't think I'd mess with the adjustment. The guy I bought this from took pictures of his trans rebuild. They are pretty simple, heavy units. It looks like the bands are the only thing that'll wear (lining). I would say you don't want less then 5 degrees or they'd be dragging.

It doesn't matter if the pointers point up or down. The proceedure is the same. I just screw them both in with my fingers until the pointer is at 12 or 6 o'clock. (Depending on your style of old or new tranny) then back one out 1/4 turn at a time till the pointer moves the 5 degrees in one direction. Then tighten the locknut on that screw and adjust the other the same way. Then reconnect the stick links and work them back and forth a few times to see how close you are. You may have to do the whole thing 2 or 3 times till you get the hang of it. What you are doing is stopping (braking) with one band, while freeing the other band for tranny direction. In a sit-still situation, the pointer will move the 5 degrees forward or backward. Going forward, 1 band is freed, 5 degrees, and the other is applied, 5 degrees Going backards is the same principal.. It's kinda like having 2 brake assys in one casing. Moving in 1 direction, you LOCK 1 brake, and free the other. Moving in the opposite direction, it is all reversed. If that makes sense. It does work.
It's all just nuts and bolts.

My pointers are point up but they wont go to the 12 o clock position. Even with my adjusters all the way loose, the pointer will only move 5 degrees at most

At this point, I would guess that your trannys have brand new, possibly overlined bands. Which is a good thing. Wtah puzzles me is why the pointer will not go to 12 o'clokc. What position does it normally rest at when the sticks are neutral.? Or disconnected fron trans alltogether? If you can, post a pic.

I will try to get a pic of them. At rest they kick back about 5-8 degrees.
