  • A couple addiations to the COOT

I got really stuck a couple weeks ago, almost put the COOT over a steep bank when I slid off a trail as I was coming down a steep grade. I ended up half on the trail, half off and the more I tried to get back on the trail the farther down the bank I got. It finally tied the COOT to a tree so it couldn't go down over the bank, walked home,( over a mile), got my Trackster and my son, and after an hour of winching and pulling, we got it back up on the trail. I decided I wasn't going to go thru that again, so I bought a 3000# winch and installed it on the COOT. Al least now I'll have a better chance of getting out of that kind of situation if it happens again.

While I was in the fabricating mood, I went ahead and installed my prop drive on the COOT. I made up a u-joint assembly from parts I picked up at Tractor Supply. For the shaft, I used a piece of 3/4" chrome shafting out of a hydraulic cylinder, welded that to half of the u-joint, the other end of the joint attaches to the output of the torque transmitter. I bolted a plate on the inside of the tub, on the other side I mounted a flanged bearing to support the prop shaft. the prop I have is a couple inches bigger than the stock prop, and has more pitch, so it should move a little more water. The prop comes off easily so I don't have to have it on when I'm not in the water. All I need now is some open water to try it out, everything is frozen over now. Just thought I'd share...

    Nice additions for the coot.
Most of us have winches because getting stuck is part of what we do.
I use mine all the time and wouldnt go into deep mud without it.
The prop setup is cool....hope to see a video of your coot swimming when the ice is melted.

Yea, these things sometimes make us think they are un-stoppable. I have a winch on the Trackster, just hadn't gotten around to putting one on the COOT. I may need to rig up a rudder on the COOT, not sure how well it will steer with just the tires turning for directional control, cant wait to try it.
