Trail bosses were only made a very few years (3 I think) and had very little difference between the years. There were 2 types of transmissions, but that was about it as far as I know. The 18" tires kept them from being very popular, and people tended to break the transmissions.....notice I said people break them. I don't think the transmissions were weak, I think too many went from full forward to full reverse instantly. After all, that's exactly what I would have done as a kid.
Trail bosses were made in Lapeer Michigan, a little over an hours drive from here. Made by a company that made hard sided pop up campers. They made a bunch of units, with poor inventory control. Rumor has it that more were stolen than were sold.
