  • Roughrider Questions

    Hi everyone,

I just picked up a basket case of a McKee Roughrider, it's in pretty rough shape but I got it for really cheap. I am not expecting much out of it, just something to play around with at the cottage. It's missing the engine and wheels and I am wondering what are some options for both that I can use.

    1. I do not think I will be able to find a JLO 230 so what is a good engine choice to drop into it? There is not a lot of room under the seat! I have a welder, so I can fab up something if I have to.

    2. What is a cheap option for wheels and tires? Does anyone run golf cart rims? I have pretty much accepted the fact that I will have to make some adapter plates for a new set of wheels.

This forum is great and I'll keep posting how I'm doing.

    davidsix,

I see its your first post. Welcome to the forum, and we are here to help. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of Roughrider owners out there, so coming up with something that will fit, may be a more personal task. I will say, for a cheap project, those little harbor freight 16hp engines seem to work pretty good. Members Toys for Me and Not so Fast have them in their Attex's and they really move the machine around the trails. Of course, you will need a 1" 4-stroke drive clutch and at least a spring for the driven clutch. A 2-stroke is what was original I think. You could probably find a single cylinder JLO that will fit from someone on here, off Ebay, or from a junked sled. For the tires, yes golf cart rims work. Check the tires and wheels forum. There are some cheap rims people have been using with good luck, and Summit Racing has tires for relatively cheap.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

Hey thanks for your tips. I'm looking for an old sled right now, I'm guessing it will end up being a two stroke. Mostly for cost savings from buying an old junked sled.

I took apart the drive train components today. Looks like I have one bent shaft, but I think I can straighten it out.

        Hi,
I have a complete Roughrider and the space for the engine is very small. The stock engine sits at an angle. If your body is in bad shape I have a spare body if you are interested in it. I am located near Shipshewana Indiana 46565. You can have it for free but I would like to get it out of my way in the next month or so.

Hi Matt, thanks for the offer. Unfortunately I am up in Canada, just updated my profile, so I am going to pass up your very generous offer.

          Cheers,

          Dave
