  • Pictures of the Hydrotrek being used in my area for constuction of power lines

There are power lines being installed in my area across the marsh just off of I-95 near Midway Georgia. Naturally the workers have to have a way to get through the marshes to be able to get to the power lines. As you can guess these marshes have very soft layers of mud and are difficult to navigate. You have probably already guessed that they use the 6 and 8 wheel drive Hydrotec machines equipped with tracks. I stopped on my way home from work and took these pictures. They had two 6x6's and one 8x8 in the yard. I never realized just how big the 8x8 really is. As you can see from the photos it is BIG! I would guess the tracks to be over 20 inches wide and ground clearance down the middle of the machine to be over 20 inches. Wow what a machine!

Wow! What a machine. I didn't think the 8x8s where that big either. Bet they get the job done tho. Have you asked for a ride along?

The 8x8 looks to be a real workhorse. What size tire was it running Dan.

Naw, I would love to go along with them but I am sure there are restrictions-danger etc, I did say to one of the crew-"Wow you get to drive these things for work?"
He told me he did and said these machines had a very hefty price tag.

Sorry Keith I didn't get the tire size but if I had to guess I would say about 30 plus inches and they looked like some type of very heavy duty commercial tractor tires about 12" wide.

I climbed in an 8x8 version at the 2013 Mud Nats.' They are really big, heavy duty machines. I really think they are more like an amphibious tractor than an amphib like we think of them.
I was impressed with the build quality and the components they use.

I got the chance to see the Hydratrek 8x8 crossing at the far end of the mud race ,and before I came close to catching up with it, it drove right across the mud and water , right up the bank on the opposite side ,and then down the dirt road leading to the sand pit party. I was very surprised at how fast it was able to drive across the mud pit. There was no way I could've kept up with it even if our machines were side by side before we entered the water and mud. Those extra wide tracks really gave it a lot of floatation.
