  • Need a bit of information

Just picked up a 1970's scrambler model 110

I got not title with it. My understanding is I need something to get it registered in order to use it crossing rivers and streams. (oregon)

First is scrambler the company that made this or did argo?

I do not see a VIN or a Serial number on this vehicle anywhere. Can anyone direct me to the location of this if their is one? I would be very appreciative for this information.

If their is not one how does a person go about getting it titled without one?

Scrambler is a company all of it's own and had nothing to do with Argo. Scrambler was sold and the factory moved (I think 3 times) before going out of business back in the 70's.
Scramblers also lacked reverse and would not make for a good "off trail" machine. Some did have an electric motor that would back them out of the garage or off a trailer, but not out of a mud hole when stuck.
All of our machines are very slow in the water and it is not wise to take them into faster moving water......if you ignore my advise, please at least have a rope tied off to shore so you wont get swept downstream.

Every state is different for registration, and since scrambler is out of business, you may have to register it as home made. Best to ask your local, friendly, and eager to help government official.

Standing on the left side of the machine, bend over and look on the left underside of the dash or gas tank mount, there should be the model number and serial number if readable.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
      Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

Hey thanks for the responses. Their is no such sticker or plaque in that area on my scrambler. I know mine is a model 1100 as far as I can ascertain. In oregon for OHV trails or offroad you only need a description of the vehicle. I was more concerned with crossing streams etc.

I know this machine only moves around 2 miles per hour in water and I absolutely agree with your advice. I would only cross slow moving water and preferably shallow. Problem is that in oregon you have to have it titled through the marine board and get an invasive species tag in order to cross a stream or river..... simply because its amphibious, funny because I can drive my baja through a river with no problems and face no fine or need no tag. Its a pain.

I know it has no reverse and we have plans for that. We plan on installing a system to solve that issue, their is plenty of room in the engine area and I weld a bit and my father in law is a welder fabricator, a good friend of mine is a master mechanic and we should be able to come up with some system to rectify this situation.

Worst case scenario this is my first amphibious vehicle and I may sell it once I get it looking pretty and go get one with reverse and true 0 degree turn ratio.

Easy to say I guess if you can afford one of those. I can't thus I have what I have. I am on a fixed income with 2 kids and a wife. I am a disabled vet and thus do not have the money to buy a sweet machine. I traded some reloading gear for this machine and now have a few months of work getting it back up to par. The chances of me finding another machine let alone a good one for the same deal are slim to none. I am sure my kids will love cruising in it when its done. Yeah id love a nicer machine but we would all love the best of the best, and we all cant afford everything we want. We learn to make good with what we can.

Sharpen your pencil, and start writing down/ adding up all the little things that project machine needs. You may just find out that it really isn't much cheaper than just buying a ready to run MaxII, and it may even cost more.
If you post up your location, and sweet talk Drew......he might just find you one of those smoking deals in your area. Somehow he has crystal ball that tells him when and where to find them. lol

Sometimes, though it costs more the only way to buy a rig is buy it, build it slow and then have a runner..not all can work out good swap deals for these units in good running condition.

I know I have taken time, a long time to do my project and still have a few hundred more to invest in axle bearings and races to complete the rebuild.

For me I can understand where the OP is coming from, especially if he is capable of doing all the work..

Good luck with your build and post pics man!
