  • Terra Jet Rebuild.

Rather than Hyjack makiman's post I thought I'd better start my own.. All the details are in my Blog.. www.robeye.net but I'll post a few important moments here too... I'll be rebuilding two Jets.. a 1970 400E and a 1974 453. Starting with the older one. I ... like others, have had to repair the tub on the Jet.. After 44 years things are bound to be in need of some help. And if you want to go paddling around in the water .. A solid NO holes tub is a must.. I like that it's steel ! I can weld.. I'm replacing the bottom, rear and front of the tub. Also upgrading the thickness to 16 Ga. Shouldn't really add weight.. but it will take more banging to damage. Here's a photo of where I'm at ..
    IMGP0014.jpg
In the next photo you can see the old and new rear panels..
    IMGP0015.jpg

Yup that a beat to SH**T piece of metal.. I'll carry on like I know what I'm doing..
See what's up in my workshop.. www.robeye.net

i used a 55 gallon metal barrel for mine when i did it. The ridges made it easy to slide front to back but gave me little of help from sliding from side to side when high centered
If it don't have 6 wheels and floats.. isn't any good to me. Have you ever tried floating a 4 wheeler across a pond... Doesn't work very well does it?

Thats a great idea for any trailer even...a barrel with top bottom cut off flattened out and one could make sides etc up from there....fantastic idea I must say.

Hmmm let me check.. Nope. I only get a few hours a week to work on the Jet. Some evenings I'm too tired. Today I liquid sand blasted the frame.. and axles ..and a few other bits. I cut out one of the new metal pieces for the tub were the axles pass through.
            IMGP0018.jpg

And I'm cleaning and looking at the bearing seal thing..

Two of my aluminum bearing holders were cracked.. I'm trying to get new ones but the factory is not returning my E-Mail. Onward

PLEASE EXPLAIN.....what is liquid sandblasting? If it's what I think please show in video if possible of how it works???

              Thanks

BTW machine shop pop those bearing retainers out something simple like I'm sure! $$pendy though I bet.

Nice job cutting the tub pieces, what are you using for material and what are you cutting it with?

So many Questions.. I have a sand blaster that hooks up to my pressure washer.. sucks up the Kleen Blast (slag) and sends it out with the 1500 psi + water pressure.. No dust.. but wet ! Works great on bigger stuff. That steel is 16 ga hot rolled sheet. 1/16 " thick.. I can cut it very easy with a 50 tooth bi-metal blade on my scroll saw. It also welds better that the thin crap. Gotta use a torch to bend it though.. And yes I'm most likely getting four new steel bearing cups made.

Won't be long till painting time... Still some welding to do.. and lot's of grinding.

Looks great so far flipped over to yer page and checked it out.

So this H2O blaster is it the one from Princess Auto? I've considered buying one for some time. I have use of a 4000PSI hot water/steam pressure washer that's freaking insane. I use it constantly and need to blast a frame so if for bout 100 bucks you are saying it works great...then I'm in.

Now yours siphon feeds correct? I'm considering adding a pressure fed blast media vessel and attempting SODA as well as sand.

Tell me more about KLEEN Blast and where I can get copious quantities cheap?

                    Any thoughts on that?

Thanks for the update you are doing great work.

Yes I got that from Princess Auto. and seemed a bit pricey.. when you see how simple it is. yup siphon feed.. but it works. Kleen blast is a product made here in GF from the old slag piles .. basically slag ground down cleaned and screened for size. We can buy it at the auto parts / rental store here.. I'm not sure where else you would find it.. It's sold in bulk to the ship yards . Pacific Abrasives is the company.

The tub is all done except the box liner coating for the outside.. The inside is painted. And I'll mask off where the axle tubes go.. Then it's time to work on the frame..

                        IMGP0026.jpg

I'm very curious to see how well the two part Epoxy Truck Box coating will work on the tub..

I'm still working on the frame. Getting all the cables and power train working good.. We have run the Rupp K340 a few times now.. see the video..

It runs good as it should.. and the rebuilt transmission works perfectly. I got my new seals and bearing cups from Terra Jet USA today.. so I can really get to putting things back together.
