  • AMF Sur-Trek

Hi all! Been working on my Sur-trek... Pulled the Transmission... Made a new Motor Mount, New Shifter Arm ( I was planning on having Whipper make me the Shifter Arm, but ended up making it myself. He would've made a nicer one, but mines functional). I put a NOS 2si 215 20hp in it. Got to drive it today... I can see why they didn't make a lot of them! The production number on mine is 79. Steering it, is like wrestling a two thousand pound Grizzly Bear!!!! They have a mind of their own! All the axles are live 24/7, just like a Coot! And steers even worse!!! The AMF only wants to go one direction and that's straight!. They should of had wheel hubs, that could have been locked, or unlocked. Maybe that's something Whipper could work on for me? Still, its a unique vehicle. I was planning on taking it to Ledges, but not going to make it. I will be taking it to Philipsburg in September. Who else is going?

So, anyone out there, who's thinking of picking up a Sur-trek, just remember, it's not a vehicle made for tight places, or making sharp turns.

    It sounds like fun!!

My Pug had the same issues when trying to drive it on the trails. You needed to start turning about 20 feet before you had to. Once you get the hang of it, it probably won't seem as awkward. The Ledges has nice wide open roads to drive.

I thought of adding a hydraulic cylinder for steering since the 87 turns lock to lock on the steering was a real work out.

The trick is to turn while moving, even slowly. Ive driven a coot too, i'ld rather have the amf's more raw traction.....try it in mud..or up steep hills, or even snow,,,amazing. and, besides, they are cool...

        Hey Joe

I'll be at Phillipsburg this year and I cant wait to see the Sur Trek! Its to bad you cant make the Ledges ride. I hope to have my Argo racer ready in time for Phillipsburg.

          Hey Troy,
I wanted to make Ledges, but I had the opportunity to work that week end... Next year. I'm going to try and bring my Scrambler to Philipsburg too. The only event the Sur-trek would be good in, is the Mud Bog.

I know what you mean when it comes to hard steering. I have an Alsport Tracker that steers like an old school bus with out power steering at slow speeds. But hey some old machines are just to cool to scrap!!!
