It comes down to two basic things. 1; Is the crank shaft tapered or straight?, and 2; If the engine is a 3 stroke, you have to use a 2 stroke clutch, and if it's a 4 stroke, you have to use a 4 stroke clutch. I'll see if I have any pics of mine with the engine out from when I converted to the Vanguard. It's all just nuts and bolts.

Interested in engine swap too
Hey Jeff,
The 20hp Kohler in by t-boss is running great now that I got rid of that silly pumper carb and put a Mikuni on it, but I've been considering the 4-stroke swap as well. It would be great to see some pics and get some specs in case the right 4-stroke lands in my lap.

I have a Vanguard 14HP in mine, and I realy don't think I would have gotten anything bigger in there. I really didn't look into it too much, but if a 16 or 18 hp isn't any taller or wider, (left-to-right as you look at the exhaust ports) you might be able to squeeze it in there. But I do have enough power with the 14 , so I won't complain. The swap was pretty easy. All you really need is (This is what I used) is a piece of 3/8 x 2 flat stock cut to the width of your frame, and to drill a few holes to mount it and the engine. I'll try and get some pictures next week for you. The exhaust is alittle bit tricky. I still have to customize mineas I have found excess flexpipe makes for too much heat inside. It's nice in winter, but summer, ouch! It's all just nuts and bolts.
