    Hello all,

    As some of you may remember i recently bought a 1964 scrambler with an 8 horse honda. I actaully bought two one running and one for parts. I have big plans for the parts one, everything is there but the motor, and steering. The axles, body and tires are good. So here is the deal.

    I have a twin cylinder 18 Briggs. It came out of a power washer and is a MONSTER I have a few questions though.

    Do you think the drive train of the scrambler will be able to handle all the power? (there is alot of torque) I Figured i would probably have to upgrade the chains, but im not sure how the rest would handle.

    Also what is the best way to home-brew some steering. I know originally that scramblers had the steering wheel and i also know that some used sticks. I want to use the sticks. But i was thinking Of using cables. Instead of hydrolics because i don't have the original part. I wanted to use some pulleys and some cable for steering to pull the calibers but i know there are better ways i just dont know how to do without the original parts. So if anyone has any ideas that would be great. It would be great if someone could post or link me pictures to how the stick steering is set up.

    I really like jerseybigfoots scrambler (the black one with the roll cage) and i think im going to use his as a model.

      Hey Guys

      Just wanted to thank everyone for all the help that you have given me in the last few weeks. I Have a few more questions though

      While i have my scrambler apart i am debating replacing the chains. Currently the machine has #40 chain. I am putting a 18 horse B/S twin I/C in. Do think i am going to have any problems with the chains breaking? If so what you would you recommend and about how much chain does it take to redo a 6x6. I was thinking somewere around 40 feet and #50 but im really not sure.

        If you change your chain size, you'll need to change your sprockets too.

        The Attex ST300D had #40 chains and I think the JLO297 was rated at about 19hp. I'd think you would be ok with the #40 chain but I'd ask Don or JerseyBigFoot to play it safe.

          Joe M's Scrambler is running the #40 chains on the axles, and he's got a JLO 400 in it. I don't think he had any problems at Phillipsburg, (at least not before I left.) If the 400 isn't breaking chains while he's running the obsticle course or Mud bog, I think you'll be OK.

            If you keep the #40 Chain, don't use an aggressive tire. I still haven't broken any chains. My 400 is around 35 hp, and develops a lot of torque.

              Hello,
              Any older attex racer running a bakerhill tranny is running #40. All baker hills run the #40. My 16hp is #40 and althought its only 16 I do have an aggressive tire and have pulled things, yanked things and have done other abusive things with it. I have broke a few older chains that should of been replaced but once I got all new chains no problems. I would just stick with a good #40 chain. Just my thoughts.

                  Cables??

                  Just my two cents.
                  Cables stretch and must be continually adjusted. Hydraulics are much better or the old reliable t-20 setup.

                    is 8HP enough to get it going good?

                      They came stock with 8,10 or 16 horse. 8 horse is good if it is geared low. You may not see much over 20mph but would still have power.

                        mine has a 16hp but i cant get it to start so i think i'll just get a newer used engine
