  • 8hp enough motor for Terra Tiger?

Came across a honda 8 horse 4 cycle engine that I would like to put in my terra tiger, wondering if thats big enough to move it ok or not and if so where and what should I use for a clutch? I am not looking to break any speed records or anything ,its more of sit in my shed so it doesnt get hurt machine than anything but all I have is trouble with the 2 stroke snowmobile engine in it now. Any Ideas?
Thanks in advance guys and gals

    Go for it!!!

8hp is enough. One of my attexes is currently running a 8hp Tecumseh and it has plenty of power. The throttle is turned down some too so my son don't get to carried away in it. It will spin all 6 balloon tires before it runs out of power. Not that they have the most traction though. When I first got it going I was curious on the power and had 2 guys trying to stop it and it wasn't even a match. Its not fast though but still a riot to drive. Early scramblers came with a 7hp Briggs engine. Attex 208tt came stock with an 8hp engine. So I feel it would be a great replacement engine for you. It wont suck down the gas either.

Thanks for the info, any ideas on a clutch? Not sure how the attex are but on mine I would need to be able to run a snowmobile style clutch,I see Richards has some but I dont have that kind of money to spend, has to be somewhere else to buy for atleast half the price.

I have got a couple comet 40 series clutches off eBay for around 80-90 new. They seem to work good on the lower hp engines. I haven't had any problem with them on the 8 or 16hp.

can you still use the original belt? They say 7/8" wide for the comet clutch but the belts on my machine are 1- 3/16"

Oh, no.... they wont work for you then, I didnt relize the tiger had such a wide belt? Sorry about that.

With some custom engineering I have had the clutch accept a 1" belt but no way for 1 3/16"

              in the clutches.,,,,

use a salisbury clutch, they are adjustable. I redo clutches all the time... and/or you can change the secondary clutch too. i have a few, if you think you need one, proper size/tension too......
              i have terra tigers too...........

really not wanting to change secondary clutch, where can I get the salisbary clutch? What I need is something that will go on a 1" shaft with a 1/4" keyway, work on a 8hp honda and accept a 1-3/16 belt . I am hoping for way too much i bet. Or will a 7/8" belt work on my secondary clutch? changing belts would be a little easier than secondary. Thanks in advance

A 7/8ths wont work on your driven clutch so best bet is to search ebay for a clutch that matches your belt.
