When they run, they are ok, trans problems from the factory,,, they become a nightmare,,,,, not for the average aatv'er........ i have 2 of them

As you can see by my Signature I'm not your "Average owner of Anything"

I do have an intrest in this aatv if it can be a viable running piece of machinery. With the fleet of toys I own (and have owned) I've developed some decent mechanical & fabrication skills.

I am not at all familar with Muscateers but if these transmissions are junk then it may be possible to swap some other drive system in it.

Muscateer Trans. expert ?

I've got an opportunity to pickup a 1965 Muscateer that has some issues with it's transmission. From what I have been told the current owner attempted to adjust the steering as it had a stronger left turn than right and now it's the same condition but opposite from what it was. He claims it will drive straight fine but will not turn sharply. Is this a common issue that just needs a proper adjustment or are these transmissions just not worth their weight in scrap metal?

Muscateer drive system

I drove over 8 hours today & picked up a Muscateer today. What an interesting and exciting piece of machinery to operate. This drive system will definitely take some time to get used to. For those of you who are not familiar with these I will attempt to describe how it works. Two drive sticks pulled backward is low forward. Push forward from here is neutral then fast forward. So for right hand turn while in fast forward pull back the right stick past neutral into low speed gear while still holding the left stick forward. For a quicker right turn or comeabout you can release the right stick too neutral then push the right foot pedal to engage the rear gear on the right side. Hence counter rotating axles in an instant. It is easy to see why these transmissions would have issues as you could easily distruct the steering clutches by engageing forward with the levers and reverse with the pedals at the same time. Not a good idea and more than likely one of the mayor reasons why the Muscateer failed.

Yep I think it will be once I get everything in order. Right now it needs the engine mounting refabricated as the drive belt is extremely loose. Currently the engine has a wood spacer block under it. Midwestern engineering! The transmission is way out of adjustment and may need relined. Low speed forward is very weak. Fast forward is not positively locked either. Rear gear with the pedals is working pretty good. So with a little practice today I was making pretty tight and fast turns applying the reverse pedals lightly while in fast forward. Pretty exciting ride to so say the least; even with the loose drive belt and what I think is a 10 hp Techumsa. Can't imagine what it'd be like with a large hp engine and performance clutches!

i drive mine once a week,,, any bigger motor might destruct the trans, that is my theory,,, ask falboa....... from on this sight, he has one also
seems the clutches aren't the problem, it is the actuators.... i'll bet yours slips too, i don't think it is the belt.. I talked to the owner , b 4 he sold it.....

Muscateer transmission tuning

Since I now have added a Muscateer to my fleet I need to know everything I can learn about these critters & especially their mysterious "black box" transmissions as this one needs some help. So please chime in and give a newby owner any and all information you have pertaining to adjusting the linkage to relining the steering clutches. I want thank those that have shared some input already.
