  • skipper rebuild

I am rebuilding a skipper from the tub up. It is becoming a little more involved than anticipated. I have to replace axles, bearings, sprockets, Etc. Any input from you guys on mistakes to avoid would be greatly appreciated. Just so you know, I have wanted an AATV since I was old enough to read the ads in the back of my dad's hunting magazines, and a buddy of mine gave me this skipper just to get it out of his way. I just turned 37, so I guess patience really does pay off in the end. This is a great site, Thanks to all of you!

    My Skipper Rebuild update

    Hello all,

Just thought I would update you all on my skipper. I have it stripped down to the tub, frame out. I have had my local machinist build 6 new stainless axles for this rig. It sounds expensive, but for a few dollars more I have superior stuff compared to the alternatives. I am in the process of reworking the drive system. I opened the gearbox, and the fluid was milk (ruined). I flushed it out clean and inspected the gears. They all look good as new. No chipping, blueing, etc. The band brakes are going to the trash, as I am doing a hydraulic disc brake refit. Of course I will have to get my machinist involved, but again, a few bucks more for superior equipment. The factory (assuming) driven clutch is also getting trashed as it is designed for a 2 stroke and I am powering this machine with a 4 stroke, plus the pulley has severe pitting from years of neglect. I plan on using a comet 40 or 40 mag series driver/driven. I also plan on using either a briggs 12-18 Hp or equiv honda. I have to do a little repair work on the fiberglass tub, and also the top, but the top is mostly cosmetics. I also plan on fabricating a front hood/dash out of fiberglass and a new rear deck, possibly with the addition of front racks. The front is designed to carry 2 more people, but I couldn't imagine this with the size of the skipper ( they are tiny) The front and dash will allow me clean up the looks and give me alternatives for wiring, steering etc. I plan on posting up some pics soon so everyone can see how this is going. It will be a long ongoing process, as all the things I have planned are gonna cost $$$ But I have waited this many years, so I see no point in hurrying now. Hope you all have a great week!

            another update

I am at the point of pulling my hair out. I have FINALLY gotten the driven clutch off the tranny. It has no markings, numbers etc. It also has a 1 3/16 inch bore. I cannot find a replacment clutch. The sheaves are badly pitted, and the spring tension is questionable. One of the cam buttons has broken off, cant figure out what to do there either. The diameter of the clutch is 10 1/4 inches, which seems big for a four stroke. I think it would have incredible torque with no top end speed. I have to find something, and may possibly get a comet driven 1 1/8 bore and have the machinist ream it larger. I am stuck right now on what to do. Any ideas?
