  • Scrambler Stock or Not?! New Owner

    Hello,
Let me first introduce my self. My name is Scott Ballard I live in Mid Michigan area. And I am 19.
I just got a Scrambler from my Grandfather, He has only had it for two weeks before selling it to me. It is a 1969 Scrambler Model number 1000 with a 7 HP briggs. The over all shape it is in I would call very good. Just minor Glass work needs to be done on the Top Shell Near the engine, I have 6 Good tires and 3 spair tires, what are also in decent Shape. I am the Third owner of this Machine Counting my Grandfather who owned it for 2 weeks. I have the Oringnal owners manual for the machine and recpiet and documents.
I am in the Process of Cleaning it Very good right now. But I wanted to ask you guys what I should do with it and what its possibly worth if i keep it stock and sell it. Verses keeping it and Doing a few things to it such as Motor and Tires, paint, ect. Here are a Few Pictures of the Machine, Let me know your thoughts!!

(The motor is out in the pics its just the Tub i pulled it all since im cleaning it.)

Hi, I´m from Germany so maybe its better to hear the opinion of a few people before you take my word. But I think if it is running, then it is worth about 1000$, you wont get moch more even if it is in better condition. But I´m sure if you sell it then you will kick your own ass one day when you are older. (sorry for the harsh words) Belive me I made this experience a few times in my life.
Such vehicles are rare and hard to find especially in good condition. Here in Germany you cant get a driving 6x6 for less than 3500$. So time and place will change the value. And if you still dont have the 6x6 fever, then try to drive around and enter a lake with a bigger AATV with more power and steering levers. After that you will keep your Scrambler even if it has less power.

Well thats just the thing, I Think it needs more Motor. The little 7hp dont do the Trick. I would like to put a JLO in it or some thing bigger. Paint it up nice and Do rims and Tires. And just kind of Trick it out. I have not had it Swiming yet. So maybe the first thing to do is Go threw it all and Then take it for a few Shake downs. And see what I think, I only Gave $250 for it .
Im having problems getting the Brakes to work Decent. Any big things that i need to really look at before I run it to much?
Whats the first thing most people do to theses?
If you have any ideas as what I should do to it let me know im allways open for a new thing that has not been done before!( im a good wrench and good fab skils)

If any one has a Good Motor for it let me know!

          Im Keeping it!

If you keep the original trans I would install a 340cc two stroke. The stock trans will not take much more. i have a stock 3400s scrambler that came with a 340 cc CCW. It does have a larger driven cvt and larger sprockets on the jackshaft. I hope to have it running by next summer. if you need any info or pics let me know.
Raced a Scrambler like yours with a 292cc motor in it back in the 70's.

Congrats on the scrambler,I would say you got a real good deal,You sound like my stepson,He trades vehicles every couple of months and then he will say he wish he had the one he traded to his friend because his friend fixed it up and it looks good. When you put time and effert into something it means alot more to you when your finished with it.For starters i would check the chains and bearings,I'm with you on the motor,More motor wound be a plus And reverse would be a big plus.Good luck on it,You'll have a lot of fun with it when you get it fixed up the way you want it.You came to the right place for help and support,This is a great website with a lot of great members that don't mind helping out.

You will have to get some wheel adapters to go from 3 lug to 4 lug or 5 lug rims,It looks like a 22 inch tire might be the biggest tire you can run.

Seems like the tire size was already mentioned.

yeah I will make some adapters, I have the template. I was thinking about making the whole new hub. instead of just the adapter. or is it a bad idea? And im going to run 4 bolt Rims

                            scrambler

the 4 lug wheels are less expensive and less work, less lugnuts too

Yes 1 piece hub is stronger. Less to worry about! So it boils down to whether you want to keep machine original or be able to go back to originals down the road?
