  • Terra Tiger axel flange

I am going to have new axels machined for my Terra Tigers. What purpose do the flanges in the attached picture serve? Can I have them machined without the flanges?

Also, does anyone have any idea what grade steel the axels are, were or should be?

Those flanges fit in the balloon tires hub giving it extra strength. If your running balloons you should use them. If not then I wouldnt bother with making them.

I would recommend talking to whipper about the steel question. He has built lots of axles.

i've been building all of my axles from 4140 steel (per Whippers recomendation) and had pretty good luck. i still bend some but it's a product of how i drive and the fact that 1" really isn't big enough for an axle.
        good luck with your machines

Yes 4140 is what were using also. And as other said you don't need rear washer if running steel rims. Only for orginal wheels.
