  • scrambler throwing chains

I keep throwing the 2 chains off of primary sprocket cluster(2 sprockets). The teeth on these sprockets look pretty worn. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It has the 16 hp techumseh.

If the teeth are to worn that could be it. But they would have to be really worn for the chains to come off. Are the chains adjusted? There should be some adjustment bolts on top of the shaft that mount to the upper crossmember. Also 2 more down under the crossmember near the shaft.

Here this should help with the adjustment locations.

The chain to the center wheel was a little loose but the chain to the rear wheel was the first to come off. Everything else works good. I hope I can adjust this problem out. What about a bent rear axle shaft or a worn axle hole ? Could this cause the problem ?

Not sure what your talking about with the worn axle hole? Bend axle could do it but normally there bent outside not inside. You could jack the machine up and turn the axles and look for a wobble. Line up a straight edge of some sort to the axle sprocket and see if it lines up to the jack shaft sprocket. If its bad enough to throw chains then it is probably so bad off line that you could visable see it though.

By axle hole I meant bearing/bearing mount bolt holes.http://www.6x6world.com/forums/image...s/dontknow.gif Thank you for your help. I hope to work on it this weekend.

I just replaced a couple of the chains on my recent purchase and had the same problem. Check that the side plates of the rear chains are not hitting the inside hub of the spocket on the three gear cluster. The hub is slightly larger on the inside of the outer spocket than on the outside. When I compared the chains the side plates on the new one are slightly taller than the old chains and thus riding on the hub which kicks the chain sideways. I simply used a die grinder to cut a slight grove in the hub to accomodate the side plates.
