  • Scrambler Reverse Motor

Does anyone have a Scrambler with the electric reverse option or know what motor that was used? I have one set for reverse but the electric motor is missing. It looks like a starter of some kind.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Do you have the mounting bracket for the starter?

Yes, the mount is there as well as the driven gear but it may have to be replaced. I thought if I found a motor with the right mounts I could match a driven gear to the motor and weld it to the existing gear face.

Well I have the same problem. All hardware and no motor. My motor mount is stamped kohler. I was curious if anybody knows if the kohler 2 strokes use a motor like that? Basical the mount has to be the same and no nose cone. I know the old k series kohler are different. I dont know even if the motor is off a kohler or not.
              Thanks!

A lot of the Kohler, Chaparral and Kawasaki twin starters were interchangeable. I've got a few if you want to try one out and see. They look very similar to the picture.

                  Hey Don,
From bolt center to center my mount is 3-9/16". The center hole where the nose cone would go is 2-1/4". I tried a starter of a Sachs and the one off my tr340 rupp. My problem was the nose cone wouldnt go in the center. I see in the pictures the motor they use dont have a nose cone. To help give you an idea here is a picture of my mount.

                  Thanks!

If i remember correctly the motor was the same starter motor used for the electric start on the 12hp tecumseh or 16hp tecumseh engines used on them. same gear to but it has been to long to remember for sure. good luck.

I measured up the starters I have and they all have a center-to-center of 3 1/2" and most of them have a raised boss of 2 7/16" so I don't think they'd fit into the mount correctly. I do have one that's an aftermarket starter for a G50B that has a boss 2 1/4", but still has the 2 1/2" mount. I think the JLO starters may be a better fit, but they'd turn opposite direction. Which way does the starter have to turn in order for you to reverse?

I bought a kohler one of ebay that I am hoping will work. The seller said it was 3 9/16". I didnt ask about rotation so I am hoping. Looking at the gear end of the starter it need to go clockwise. But the toothed rotor can be put on the other side of machine too and that would make it work if its counter clockwise.
I will post my results with this old kohler generator I guess starter. I just won and payed auction today so hopefully by end of week I can get it and mess with it this weekend.

keep us posted Larry. if that doesn't work, i'll steal the starter off the next junk riding mower that comes through with a tecumseh and bring it to ashtabule for you.

That would be awesome. I will diffiantly update my findings. But I have a hh100 with a starter and its different. I have a hh120 with no starter but appears to mount the same way the hh100 does so I believe it wont work either. I also check a ohv180 and its also different. The electric reverse mount says kohler on it. This starter I bought looks like it would work and is off a kohler generator I guess. Crossing my fingers!
