  • Scrambe Rebuild...new transmission??

Hello all, I am a new 6x6 owner...well technically its just a pile of parts.....

I got a scrambler 1000. The catch, it is in parts.....completely. 4 rubbermade bins to be exact. I believe it to be a 1970ish, though the engine(also completely in parts) is a jlo 297L. This machine came with everything except chains, wheels, and the back seat.

I'm thinking get the engine running first, then linking it to a rebuilt argo transmission and either use the mechanical brakes, or fabricate a way to mount the scrambler hydraulics on the mounting plate....

once this is somewhat figured out, rustoleum all the rusty axles and sprockets and throw the thing back together. Then deal with the fact the the drive sprokets off the transmission aren't goign to line up with the ones on the rear axles the way they are supposed to.....

Ok...thats my rambling for the evening...any help or direction would be appreciated....if I'm way off please let me know...if should scrap the thing let me know.

    Cheers,

    -Brian

yup...scrambled...and I like my eggs over easy....

I'll snap some pics tomorrow. It doesnt seem like a toatally undoable(not a a word) project to me, but I"m also the guy with two wood boats and well...will take on a project in a heart beat. My girlfriend thinks I was nice enough to make a dump run for someone.....

The intriguing parts of the project is its like a puzzle, and would be a blast to get going. I've had worst projects(Scat II hovercrafts) and had to rebuild engines with much more issues(1950's Arona 11.5hp diesel currently in my sailboat). SO it is totally doable in my mind.....but everyone tells me I am crazy.......hence owning a 40 year old 6x6 aatv makes total sense to me.

if your crazy like the rest of us, then welcome aboard. i know of some scramblers with the T-20 trans (Max, hustler, attex...) so i can't think of any good reason not to transplant an argo trans into one. i say go for it and post lots of pictures of the build

Yep Race i think he will fit right in with us. Go for it, the sky is the limit and the only thing stopping you is...........nothing! Post pictures we would like to see it and your progress. Never have seen a Argo transmission in a Scrambler but what the heck.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"

Congratulation on the project. As a member of the Junk Wars 6x6 rebuild club I have some suggestions:
The Argo trans would be a good option for a Scrambler. The scrambler brakes would not adapt well to the Argo trans. Use the Argo brake rotors and Argo hydraulic brake set. They should be reasonable compatible with Scrambler hydraulic slave cylinders.
Build a new jack shaft with longer drive tubes to line up the sprockets. (I did the same to install a t-20 in a Scrambler)
adjust the jack shaft gear ratio to suit the way you want to drive. The Argo trans has a significant gear reduction built in. The scrambler uses the sprockets to create the reduction.

              Hey Brain,
Congrats on your purchase. Sounds like a cool project and nothing you cant handle. I love builds like that. Please keep updates on it.

              Hey Jerseybigfoot,
              Great tips there.

                scrambler

Thanks for the advise Jersey! I'll definately take all that into consideration as I slowly ponder the reassembly.

thanks for the encouragement everyone...I figure for a free vehicle, I can invest a ton of sweeat equity and come out with something somewhat worth while....

                hear are som pics

Looks like a 1968 or 69 7 HP unit. The axles have spring clutches which can be reworked to eliminate the clutch feature which is not needed. The good thing is the this set up is you can change from the 41 pitch chain to 50 pitch by welding the new sprockets to the old clutch flange. The rest of the trans looks in rough shape. i would upgrade the chain and then use the Argo trans with a nice 18Hp Briggs Vanguard.

a briggs huh....should I scrap the jlo 295L ? it seems to be in ok shape...no scoring on piston and a new cylinder to rebuildit with....will this not be enough power if decid eto use it? I was kind of excited about rebuilding this....but if its not worth it that makes total sense.

Im sure Jersey would agree but if you want to run the jlo it will work fine. Expecially with the low and high range argo tranny. If that what you want to run I dont see an issue with running it.

The JLO should run fine. I actually envisioned the same project but with a Briggs.
