  • Building Of "Supaduty".My Aussie Made ATV

It's about time I show you boys and girls what if been up to and except a bit of criticism.Feel free to shoot anything down in flames if you think the idea sucks,I'm ready for it.You guys are my peers on this subject so have fun. What I am after is a machine that can carry,a lot,10-12 people, climb step hills dragging logs out of box canyons all day and not fail.Being able to float would be nice but not necessary as water is hard to find.Easy to control, might get the wife involved, fast on flat ground and repairable in the field with readily available parts.I'm looking at a 1000cc jap bike motor with it's 5-6 speed gearbox going through the normal chain reduction of the donor bike {adjustable}through a simple forward, reverse gearbox {homemade} to a car differential.4 to 1 ratio. The axles going to the center wheels with chains going to front and rear axles off these.Between the front axles is a dog clutch which when used locks left and right sides together so it pulls straight driving all 6 wheels at the same speed for maximum traction,a true 6 wheel drive.Of course this cannot be used when turning.this is the drive train.

    motor

If you want this thing to climb, pull, and haul a few people, then I would use a different engine. A bike motor has lots of top end horsepower, but they don't have any torque. This will not work well with the type of driving that you say you want to do with it. If you really want to pull logs with it, you should look for a diesel engine, they have lots of torque.
I don't want to go fast, I just want to go anywhere.

It might have the power to do it, but it won't be easy to cool, and the gearbox and clutch surely wouldn't stand up.

Nice point about using diesel, they do develop low down torque.I was hoping the multi speed gearbox of the bike motor would nullify this shortcoming. As for cooling,an electric radiator fan out of a car or two I'm hoping will cope. The clutch and gearbox breaking, hope not,I was concerned with the chain,it's got to handle all the torque.

          Sounds like a cool project.
I would consider using a cvt setup. Although all the gears sound good I think the a cvt system works as well and is simple to operate and maintain. If geared right you shouldnt have any problems with durability in large loads. Maybe the cvt runing to a 2 speed forward-n-r. Just my thoughts on it.

It would be do-able with the parts from the bike engine and gearbox, remembering that as you gear down rmp, torque goes up by that same ratio and everything down the line needs to be sized for whatever forces you encounter at each change (mostly just for torque in your application.. but things need to be rated for rmp too in some situations). If you use chain, you can use this as a guide: ANSI chain specs

I would also suggest a CVT.. you can look into trying to find an old car with a CVT and swipe the engine and tranny out of it. If you need more info on that do a search on wikipedia.org for CVT to find out what cars were built with them.

My stalled project is somewhat similar.. this might give you some other ideas - Gaganator

              BIKE motors

I've had great success with bike motors in the past.My 4 wheel buggy wheel stands on bitumen, tar. It's a 660cc Yamaha 4stroke from a dirt bike and it's done that for 10 years.I find them very reliable, potent and compact motors with a lot of good features.Internal, sequential gearbox{with no reverse though}High output alternator{for charging and lighting} and very easy to mount{only 3 points}Parts are available everywhere out here{Australia}And everyone knows how to work on them.As for using a CVT,it would make it easier but please correct me if I'm wrong any AATV owner, but they always sound as if there slipping.I only have video footage to go by{no AATV's out here} and if this is the case I think in my application something is going to fry sooner or later.

                2 speed gearbox?

Doubt there is a cvt in the country but the two speed gearbox with reverse, what would I get that out of?Saves me making one out of auto gearbox parts.Golfcart Larry,I'll have a look for one.Let me explain the project a bit better.Bought a remote property with a valley. We want to settle in the valley.4x4 quads just get out of the valley but the snakes{deadly} get a good shot at your legs on a quad unlike a 6x6 with a body.Got to clear a lot of trees in the valley around the house for bush fire{wild fire} safety. There my trees and there worth a fortune if I can get them out.Other wise I burn them in there. At the top it's about 2mile open ground to the main road,This I don't want to do at walking pace. Also I want to use this machine for kangaroo shooting on the open ground, carrying a few mates with shotguns to control the numbers. This Job is wreaking the vehicles we drive home in.This may explain the need for gears.

cvt out of golf carts maybe? or ebay. Argos has the speed. Maybe gear box out of riding lawn mower but get an old cast iron style. The aluminum housing style are weaker. The problem there would be there gearing though. Only other idea is small automotive?

I clicked send and though of another,

Some polaris atvs have 2 speeds and a cvt.

There are a lot of vehicles with CVT trans in them in Australia. There are Max and Argo AATV's and even the Yamaha Grizzly has CVT trans which I'm pretty sure has HI LO & Reverse. CVT belts don't slip unless they are overloaded. It's going to be pretty hard to make a vehicle that will be strong enough to drag logs up hills, and yet be nimble enough to go hunting in. Sounds like you need a tractor for the work and a good aatv for fun.

We couldn't locate a front cv for a honda big red TXR300 in Australia, new or 2nd hand when we needed it{Had to repair the basket}The jap quads would possibly be getting parted out but you would need to be in the right place at the right time to pick up the {prize} 2 speed gearbox and if it were the case I think I'd have to buy the whole wreck.A max or argo,I've never seen one for sale, let alone someone letting me grab the gearbox out of one.A tractor with cables so as to not roll over and a lot braver than I and a good aatv for three times the price of the vehicle towing it all

For a transmission I was talking something like this. Not sure if this is a 2 spd one or not so you may have to ask sellers questions or research the 2 speed models. I have seen them sell for under $100us plus shipping. There seems to be a lot of expensive ones on there know though so waiting will pay off. I searched "polaris gear box", trans or transmission
                            POLARIS 2X4 TRANSMISSION WORKING:eBay Motors (item 380177697568 end time Nov-20-09 17:59:24 PST)

When I said cvt I mean centrifugal variable transmission. Like 6x6 and snowmobiles. The variable belt style. Polaris atvs used them too on those gearboxs. So that would make it easy if you could find one cheap.

Outer hull done.Bought master cylinders and brake line.Bought gas tank and fuel line, fuel filler and cap.Started master cylinder mounting bracket and linkages and will finish tomorrow.Should have brake lines run by weekend if not fuel and vapor lines as well.Progress is good.[IMG][/IMG]
