  • Terra Tiger Jackshaft slop

First off, I have been erroneously using the term jackshaft in referencing both the jackshaft and the primary drive shaft. Mea Culpa. My question here is about the jackshaft itself (the true one).

I have all three derusted, primed and painted. I have reassembled them accoring to the manual and all three have about 3/4" of "shaft play" back and forth through the sprockets. My guess is that there is not supposed to be any side-to-side play and that despite what the manual describes, I should space them out using washers (equally on both sides) so that there is no play. Is this correct?

If so, is it critical to use brass washers? The ones that came off were all brass and my guess is that that is by design. Here is a video to show what I am talking about. And again, I have the same slop in all three. Also, I might as well ask, any idea what causes this slop?

    Thanks in advance.

Hello Erik. I would not worry much about the side to side play. When the drive train comes under load it will self align. The side play does look excessive but it was designed in there. The things to look for is sprocket to sprocket alignment when you get it installed back in the machine. It is sort of difficult to see all the alignments with the upper body installed just because the lack of room to work with but I have done it.

There isn't any adjustment for sprocket alignment as it was fixed into the design but I always looked for gross misalignments.

Side movement isn't a problem!!!!! As it (the sprocket) has to move sideways when you disengage steering clutches! Just make sure the bushings inside sprockets are to spec. and not worn. I would put all new bushings in them and check shaft OD. And would install new Diamond chain or comparable when you reassemble them. Cheap chain isn't worth it! And you'll have to adjust them all time.

I will just post here because there are others that may be interested. No, the electrolysis just derusts the items. I leave them in over night, then in the morning, take them out and rinse them. You also need to lightly wire brush then (hand held) to get the residue off and wipe them down. Once dry, I coat them in rust converter then paint. I only used silver paint because I wanted a "light" color and it was on sale at a deep discount. If the weather permits, I save a bunch of parts out of the electrolysis tank (over a couple of days)and pressure wash all the residue off in a few seconds. It just saves time. I keep the tank running basically day and night. I have all winter to get through all the parts. Slowly but surely they get done. You could probably sand blast them all in a few hours, but I have lots of time and this way I can go at my own pace.
