  • Jiger 152 Rebuild

I’ve started taking apart my Jiger 152 in an attempt to rebuild it. Most people would probably consider it a basket case but it's very complete and I want attempt to save it.

I got if off eBay a few years ago from a guy in Maine. The body has a few dings and scratches but seems to be in pretty good shape overall. It has been left out in the elements for a long time and all the mechanical components will need extensive work. I plan to tackle the drivetrain before spending anytime on the body. I don't want to end up with a restored body and then find out that the drivetrain is a lost cause.

It came with all six original Jiger tires, all of them totally shot. I have picked up a few Goodyear Runamuks and hope to use them. The Jiger axles are 22 inches center to center. The 22 inch Runamucks I have are around 20 inches in diameter, unmounted. Hopefully mounted, and with a few pounds of air they will still be under 22 inches. I have to cut the old Jiger tires off the hubs and weld on some wheel adapter plates. If anyone one has a set of Jiger hubs that have already been converted to a standard wheel pattern please let me know. I'd love to avoid this step if possible!

I pulled the steering clutches apart and it looks like there isn't much left to them. I'm going to have to make new clutch plates but I think the pulleys/clutch housings are salvageable.

A few of the friction discs cleaned up pretty well, the rest are almost no existent. These are the steering clutch discs. The 3 on top are from one side, the bottom two from the other. Either they weren't adjusted properly, or the previous owner always turned in the same direction.

That all I've got for now. Gotta get back in the garage and clean up a lot more parts. Updates will probably be few and far between but I hoping that some feedback from the members here will help keep me motivated and working on this project. Also, if you have any old Jiger parts kicking around let me know.

    Thanks,
    -Dean

Wow. Great pictures and a cool project. I've never seen a Jiger in person so its great that you are taking the time to post pictures. Good luck and I will keep my eyes open for any parts I may stumble across. I can't wait to see it when it is done.

            Hey guys,
The project is moving ahead slowly. A few days ago I finished stripping the control stick. I think I'll be able to reuse just about everything once I get it cleaned up. The turning brakes will need to have the friction material bonded back to the pulleys.

Today I cut about 24 feet of #35 chain out of the Jiger and cut the tires off the hubs so I can weld on some wheel adapters.

I still can't manage to get the hubs off the axles. The Jiger tires don't use the standard 3 bolt balloon tires. They have one center lug nut that holds the wheel tight against a dimpled plate. I've taken out all the bolts but I still can't get the hubs to budge.

I ordered 6 discs of friction material for my steering clutches on Friday. The shop said I should get them early this coming week. Hopefully they will work. I just gave them the measurements I could get off the best disc I had since there are no specs or parts available for these machines.

I think I'll start pulling the axles out this week.

              hey jeepdoc78,
very nice project, i bought a jiger 152 a few days ago over here in germany. it is the only one in germany
looks very hard your project, hope you will get it. my jiger was in a little better condition but i paid
2500 € for it. much money, but i love the shape so much. my tires are the original ones but only a few
holes. i like so much the original tires but mine are nearly at the end. i thought about buying 21x12-8 tires and
some 8x8 rims. the idea is to welt the rims larger, extend them to get something like 8x12" to get this knobbly
looking of the original tires. I don´t know if it works, but i let you know.
for now, i will first try to get it run with the original tires. i might have some question around the clutch-stuff.
maybe you can help out. i´ll take it appart and back to you, if thats ok.

              Thanks and hello from Hamburg/Germany
              Tim
