  • Recent Scrambler purchase, lots of questions

I just recently picked up a Scrambler 6x6. It is a model 1000, has steering wheel, gas tank in the rear, pull start, no reverse, three seater, and has the 8HP motor (which I don't think was the original motor for the model 1000). I've been going through it and checking things out and fixing what needs fixing. It is pretty much working and my oldest daughter has been driving it around the yard and she even took it through the pond the other night....no leaks detected. There are a couple things I know are missing, these include; The vent/cover at the rear, the molding that goes around the body at the part between upper and lower, also the lights are missing though the holes are there, and there is no battery (I think the model 1000 originally had a 6V for lights only). There is wiring in the thing now and two toggle switches up front. I'm assuming one switch is for the lights....what is the other? They are currently not hooked to anything. Person I got it from said it is a 1979, does anyone know if that is correct? I know, lots of questions here, but hoping the experts on this forum can help out.

    Thanks,
    Steve

      Yes, thanks...I printed those out!

So, is there a way to determine the year this thing as made?

It's probably an 69 or early 70's. There is a serial number on the cross support for the steering wheel or on one of the slave cylinders for the steering wheel.

Briggs engines have a code on the upper part of the flywheel housing. The code is 8 digits long I think. The first 2 numbers are the year, the second 2 numbers are the month and next 2 numbers are the day. The last 2 dont really mean anything to us. If the motor is original the code will say the year. Also if the salsbury clutch is original they have a 2 digit year code on that tag that is held on with the 3 outer cover bolts. You should see what I am talking about. They are 2 digits all by themselves. Hope that helps some.

Sure is nice looking scrambler! What general region do you live it? Im near Kalamazoo. About 20 minutes south.

Did some investigating last night, the motor I suspect is not original as it is an 8hp with a starter on it....and I do not believe the model 1000 had this. The motor dates to 1988. There is a yellow sticker up front near steering....indicates model 1000, Action Age of Cleveland Ohio and there is a serial number though hard to make out....looks like 30?2....definetly four digits. I took the upper body off and found a sticker undernieth up towards the front....serial number 680, made 11-26-1968. This sticker is not from Action Age but another company....Plastics Performance or something like that.

I'm in New Hudson, MI....just East of Brighton.

This Scrambler came without headlights from the previous owner, though I believe it originally had them. Where can I find these, or something that would be close to what these originally had? I found sealed beam 4" 35watt bulbs at auto parts store that probbaly would work fine, but what about the trim rings to hold them in?

                Thanks,
                Steve
