  • help! amphicat gearbox

hi, Im new to the 6 wheeler thing but i picked up an old amphicat b7 that was mostly complete exept for the transmission. after doing some reasearch ive determined that i dont have the t20 my machine has the diff assembly built in so it looks as though im only missing a foward and reverse gearbox?? did they use such a thing?

    Hey Johndoe,
They did use a forward, neutral, reverse gearbox. I believe it was one of there earliest designs if not the first? It was made by ontario drive and gear (aka ODG who makes Argo)It was something like 5"x5"x7" roughly. Finding one is probably going to be hard but not impossible. Try posting in the wanted section. Also keep an eye out in the fields and tree lines in your neck of the woods and maybe you can find another donor machine for you.

is there any other types of trnsmissions that are readily available that might work in place of that that you know of?

Basically it was a gear box with a driven clutch as an input and output was just a #40 sprocket. If you can fabricate, I know comet made a fnr gearbox. LINK. Another option is polaris atvs had a gearbox with a driven already on it. Some of them had H,L,N and R. That would be cool if you could mount it. If you are not worried about reverse for the moment you could just put a jack-shaft setup in there to drive the main clutch shaft. That would be pretty easy and cheap but you loose reverse. Maybe a gear box from a older snowmobile that had reverse? The original wasnt all that beefy. The housing was aluminum and the whole thing is small. If it held up then I dont think you need to worry to much on weakness as far as the gear box.

why not look for an amphicat trans to put in there they were built by borg warner the same company who made the T-20 and some say their tougher than the T-20

Yea, good idea countrycummins. The later models used a borg warner "plunger" style transmission. That would also be an idea but they are also hard to find and/or expensive. It wound directly bolt up though so you still will need to fabricat. But that would be the ideal thing to do if you run into one. Same size chain and all. Also a baker hill 7000 series would be sweet! I had one sitting in a B7 cat once and almost did that. It would fit and also uses the same size chain.

Save yourself lots of time, headaches, and money and avoid Route6x6/Richard's Relics. There are tons of 6 wheelers in the northeast, it's just a matter of finding them. Try posting an ad on the wanted section of the site here too. Also, always check Craigslist and Ebay. I also might be able to point you in the right direction for some parts for your machine as well.
