  • Amphicat trans, what is it ?

I have an Amphicat and am having trouble getting it into reverse.
I have had a Hustler with the T20 Borge Warner and this is definetly not that.
Anyone know what trans Amphicats came with.
    Thanks, Tim

If I remember correctly, there were actually two or three different transmissions that came in the Amphicat over the years. The Amphicat transmission was originally developed in the late 60's by Ontario Gear and Drive (the company that manufactures Argo today). The company switched owners 3 times and moved from Canada, Michigan, and then down to Mississippi. Anyways, there is a brief history of the Amphicat. As far as the transmission goes, post up some pics and we'll be able to help you more.

One of the transmissions , I think the later models, had a hoop on the front that you push down with your foot and then pull the sticks back to put it into reverse. I've played with them on the bench and in the machine, but I've never driven one. I've heard the material on the bands falls off when the machine gets old.

I have 2 transmissions for sale.

          amphicat trans,,,,,,

Hi. i rebuild them i have several adjusted, ready to go.... there was the OGD b7 It was a little 4 x6x8" box f/n/rev . then there was the borg warner, the one with the 6 plungers/springs, and lastly the the junk 2 speed forwards one, that basically put the amphicat out of business.....the input shafts broke off and shattered the gearbox...often
          What model is your amphicat? 00079? 0123? 0121? .......

                amphicat trans

That is an almost indestructable borg warner. does it slip or just impossible to go into gear? remember, leave the sticks in neutral when you use the reverse...

Hey maybe I have been doing it wrong. You mean hold down on loop and giver the gas. No sticks needed? I will give that a try. When all else fails, read the manual. Thanks Amphiman1

Just to finish this matter up. Amphiman1 said the Amphicat has a Borg Warner Box and it seems to be a good one. Previous owner showed me how it grinds badly when you push sticks and hold down reverse loop. Nothing was wrong with mine, Amphiman1, "leve sticks alone, hold down reverse loop and gas it, works fine. I just hope the preveious nimrod owner didn't do too much damage grinding on reverse. Thanks to all for the input.

NEXT UP. I have a Yamaha 2hp outbourd to mount on her.

                        amphicat trans...

Hi, step on the "loop" then give it some throttle.. more pressure on loop may be necessary,,,,sticks in neutral.. backwards yoiu go, If the trans is adjusted properly, you can steer it in reverse too...
