  • Old sierra trail boss

Will anyone know the largest size tire you can put on a old sierra trail boss?
It has 18x9.5x8 on it now.
    Can someone help?
One more, what is the chain size, 40 or 50?

    Thanks
    big bad john

Chains are #50 roller 5/8. I've seen a picture of a boss with (I think?) 20 inch tires on a beach. The pic is out there somewhere, I just have to find it.
It's all just nuts and bolts.

Thank you for the info. Jeff. Do you know or anyone know where i can get parts for this sierra t boss? I need some axles and sprockets 18t and 12 tooth and wheels and axle bearings and what ever?
Is it worth doing what i call a ground up rebuild?
Thanks to all for your help

That's kinda tricky. The boss isn't that popular, but those that have them (Or parts) like to hang on to them. The best you can do is keep an eye on the boards and in ebay or craigslist. But be careful. There is a crook here in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin that advertises parts and/or complete bosses. STAY AWAY FROM HIM! What I have found most is/are incomplete machines being sold as is for parts. 4 or 5 hundred bucks for an incomplete machine isn't T-O-O bad. Concentrate on axles and trannys being part of the purchase. Trannys are the hardest to come by in my book. As I said, people hang on to that stuff. Richard's Relics has added axle bearings to his inventory. Dont' get me wrong, he is a nice guy and decent buisnessman, but a bit pricey. He is also very helpful with information and specs. Anote on trannys; There are no replacement parts available or made for these trannys. You can still get seals, but that's it. (That's why everyone hangs on to "EXTRA" trannies. The left and right trannys are interchangeable, but the main input shaft has to be swapped. And the brake bands can still be relined. Getting back to axle bearings; as I mentioned, Richard has replacements. If you can get one out, you can probably get replacements from local bearing suppliers. Just take an old one with you and they will work with it. If you care to chat about things, call me @ 414-940-4591. If I don't answer, just leave a message stating that you want to talk trail boss, and I will return your call. (Recording will be from ABC Locksmith Services.) I hope I helped here, and hope you can get your boss up n runnin soon.
It's all just nuts and bolts.
