Do you have one hydrolic wheel motor driving each side chains ,or only one wheel motor driving both sides of chains.

Larry, the decision to have the chains outside was an easy one for me. I weighed all the pros and cons, and found only two cons. I was worried about brush and rubble derailing a chain, and I was worried about dirt wearing the chain down early. So far neither have been an issue. I've taken it through mud, cornfields, and heavy brush. And if the chain wears early, they are easy and cheap to replace. The pros are obvious, why worry about the chain getting dirty when you can have all the ground clearance you want? The whole underside is adjustable, so I can add riser blocks, big tires, or even a suspension, without having to drill any holes in the body.

I smiled when you mentioned that brushguard. I've had people examine it closely and they will SWEAR its all tube steel. When in fact it is poplar. Yes, wood. It has the look I want, it can take a hard hit, and best of all didnt cost anything. Thanks. Oh, and the tires are 18".

Mudbug, I didnt mean to imply that I was using hydraulics, only that I thought about it. I got a price on one hydraulic motor, then headed for the door without it.

Homebuilt finally finished?

IMG00571.jpgIMG00573.jpgIMG00570.jpgMy title: "Homebuilt finally finished!" was a lie. It will never be finished. I keep finding things I like better, or different, and keep adding them. I wanted a padded bench seat, ok? So I went ahead and made one, but I wanted material that wouldnt crack in the winter. So I stripped the vinyl off of TWO snowmobiles that I hadnt ridden in years. Yes, I know thats really sick. Then I wanted a red oak stained dashboard. The brand of stain was Minwax, with 3 coats of Minwax polyurethane. Hope you like it, that stain was expensive. I posted pics somewhere here. Having a great time 6-wheeling, Ive got 10 hours showing on the meter now. This is probably the most enjoyable hobby I've ever had. Should have started it long ago.

Smyser Dirt bikes have thier chains on the outside if it works for you great. Have you ever heard of Hydro chain for constantly wet enviroments? they also make a heavy duty chain for almost all sizes with more tensile strength and flame hardened sprockets to last longer.

Smyser: Homebuilt or a factory machine, none are ever finished. But thats a good thing cause you keep making improvements! BTW I love the dash, looks awesome Are you still planning on getting swimmy tires and taking a dip? I really would love to see how it goes.

Thanks for the info Chris, I have found HD chain, but it cost 3 times as much. I looked into different chains and will probably upgrade, when my "hardware store" chains go bad. Thanks.

Thanks 6x6, I have alot to do before I can put it water. First, I need to buy a trailer (there isnt any water around me), second I need to find ribbed tires for this size of rim. I am sure I can find some, but I dont want to pay for them (the trailer either). With enough time, I feel these things will fall into my hands for little or nothing. Glad you liked the dash. I made some seats once using an old soft top tonneu cover. You can get older ripped ones pretty cheap if you post a wanted ad on craigslist. I know a little late now but.......I also thought of using one for a soft top canopy cover.

smyser check ebay for your needs I bought 30 feet of # 80 chain for $80 nib that should have cost me over $ 300.

Larry, thanks very much, I didn't think about that. Craigslist is one of my favorite hunting grounds, in fact, this machine would never have happened if not for craigslist. About 50% of my parts came from other peoples backyards. Nice thinking on that tonneu cover. You would be a natural at building one of these. You have the mind of a true scavenger.

Chris, I'm not a huge fan of Ebay nowadays. They are really starting to gouge their sellers by forcing Paypal on everyone. Yes, I'm sure I could get a great deal on my chain, but I've pretty much sworn them off. I'd pay extra to buy the same thing out of the Grainger catalog. You are really using #80 chain?! What brand of 6x6 do you have? Again, thanks for the insight, I'll look at Ebay just to see.

I was just wondering how your machine is doing? Did you get it tested in the water? Did you get rid of the lawnmower tires and try some other ones yet?
