  • scrambler reverse idea

I am trying to pick some brains here.In the past I made a split sprocket and mounted it to a hub and welded it to my scrambler drive shaft.I used a sprocket for #40 chain,I tried to use a nissan patffinder starter motor I had laying around by cutting the cone off the starter and mounting a sprocket to it.Well it almost worked but the starter motor could not move the scrambler more that a few inches.Has anybody modified a cheap winch to use the motor for a reverse??I know my $40 harbor freight winch is extremely strong and has pulled my scrambler out of anything.I just have these ideas rolling around my head if I could use the winch motor and line to turn the jackshaft.

The original scrambler reverse was a starter motor...I suspect it was your ratio that was incorrect. The starter will have to be geared down to move it slowly.
Terra Tiger with reverse - YouTube
The reverse I put in the TT was done with a starter and a flywheel out of a Gm 3.1L (light duty starter) It was good for backing into the garage or off a trailer, but would never have gotten you out of a mud hole.

Yes I like the video and that is exactly what I had in mind.My problem I noticed is that the drive belt in the cvt will fall down into the driven and drive sheaves and grab the sheaves keeping the scrambler drive train from moving backwards. When pushing forwards the belt will loosen up on the sheaves and the scrambler can be pushed forward, but its still hard to do.The scrambler has a weird trans, what does the terra tiger have?

I had pictures of the setup on my last computer before it crashed and burned. I wish I had them backed up.
Going by memory....The scrambler setup is similar to the TT. Primary cvt clutch on motor, secondary on a straight shaft with clutches/brakes on each side. When you want to turn, the clutch on the side of the machine that is the inside of the turn will disengage(quit driving those wheels) and the brake will also engage on that side. I hooked the flywheel to the main shaft next to the secondary clutch. The engine needs to be turned off before using the reverse starter motor, and the belt will slip in the primary clutch.

        Hope that helped.....
What happened to the idea of putting the baker-hill trans in it?

I still have the baker hill 6000 trans and its all ready to go but it also has no reverse. The scrambler is all dialed in now and working great so I kind of dont want to put the baker hill in unless I start having problems again.I still have the original attex 208tt with new axle bearings and a new 13hp engine that I bought for the attex. The attex body would never float due to all the crap riveted to it.I also just picked up another acrambler thats been sitting forever but at least it has an engine in it.I understand about having the engine off before backing up,to tell you the truth I dont even know if the starter motor was that good but I do believe that the sprocket I used was to small,a flywheel ringear is much bigger. You did an awesome job on your terra tiger,it is a really nice machine.I have seen pictures of the original scrambler reverse option and it is probably similar to what you did.I also wished you had pics but isnt that the way it always goes !

            Time to find a baker-hill 7000 or a t-20 to throw in it. You really can't beat a t-20.

PM me if you want to talk about a t-20.....I might just have a fresh one.
