I am new to the 6x6 aatv's and just got two in a swap deal.I have a Amphi cat that runs great with a little tinkering is should be a good ride.Took it out in the snow and ice last night,it took me a hour to wipe the grin off my face.

The other one is a 69 scrambler missing the motor,I just picked up a 16 hp briggs vangard for $165 off a cement wheel barrow. It runs great looks a little dirty but It will clean up good.Any info on the scramblers would be good to know, what was the original motor size?
Any coment or hints to putting this motor in would be helpfull. The machine looks in good shape and was stored inside up off the ground and the body is in great shape.000_0003.jpg000_0002.jpg000_0004.jpg

Hi Brent, Congrats on the machines. I think the scramblers mostly came with 8,12and 16 single cyl. motors. Also had a 340 2-stroke. You may have to build a frame for the Briggs as the angle glassed into the tub may rip out. I may do that with mine if I ever get around to it. Good Luck Mike Duggan

I got my 16 hp vangard motor and comet duster clutch.I am going to start to make a motor mount for this.
I want to do dual stacks for this is there any problem people have run into doing this?

you may find that the Vanguard is too wide for the scrambler (to be able to get the clutches aligned properly)

If by dual stacks, your talking exhaust... It will work ok, just be careful to keep water out. A vanguard will work better from a performance standpoint with a 2 into 1 header. It helps with scavenging, and the restrictive exhaust ports on the briggs are one thing that limits them on power.

Is the bolt patern the same as the motor that came out of it?Then the crank should be close to the original spot,or is it the other side of the motor that is wider and I cant move it over enough?

I can see your point on the 2 into 1 exhaust and I was going to put tractor flappers on them to keep the water out with a cross over tube.

the Vanny is about 4 inches wider than most of the singles. I had a scrambler briefly, and from what I remember, I fear that the flywheel side of the engine will be against the tub and still leave you an inch or 2 short of clutch alignment. Like I said, I'm going off a 2 year old memory of a machine I didn't mess with a lot. Toss it in and see if it will work.

On the exhaust, duals will work fine with the tractor flaps, but it won't maximize performance

100_4117.jpgThanks for your help I also have a 13hp single honda clone to put in there that may fit better.I am waiting for my clutch to come in to check out the alinement.
I took my amphi cat that runs to the vintage snowmobile show this weekend,it was a hit and I towed sleds that broke down.
How does the 4 stroke compare to the power of the 2 strokes? That thing in low pulled a sled with a rider (230lb) up a big hill
no problem,I was impressed. Will the 4 stroke do the same?I know its going to have more low end tork but what about the top end?

Two strokes tend to make most of their power toward the upper end of their RPM range. A 20hp (or so) JLO single cylinder is making 20hp at upwards of 5000rpm, and maybe only 10hp during most of the time you're using it. The story would be the same for a four stroke, but your usable RPM is about cut in half. Like you say, you'll likely have more torque in the bottom end with the clone engine, but don't expect the full 13 ponies to be available in the low end.

GREAT looking Scorp' TK440 in the picture. I'd love to have the Cuyuna out of that critter....

Lol, everybody loves raincaps... (I have one for my exhaust too...) Just don't expect it to keep all the water out, you should still at least put a coffee can over it. Or just keep it under a shed.

Rain caps are to exhaust systems as to the cherry is to the top of the sundae!

I had to fight with Air Bud to keep from installing a stack and rain cap on the BFD. "C'mon Dad, a diesel needs a stack and a flapper!" I may have to relent when we get around to repowering the Swamp Fox- The bigger the boy gets, the harder he is to say no to.
Stuck in the seventies- not in the swamp.

I was originally planning on using a Kubota-style muffler, and lay it horizontally on the outside of the engine cover. Then I thought, "This would defeat the need for a rain cap". So, I've revamped the entire proposed design for the muffler, solely to accomodate a rain cap. The Kubota runs smooth, quiet and pretty clean, what little I've run it. I was hoping for a loud, rattley engine that puked black smoke out of a flapper, but.... .sigh. Probably shouldn't have done that valve job.

Heck, if he wants to paint the Swamp Fox purple with pink polk-a-dots, I'd think you'd better let him.

If I ever get a 980 Bigfoot, I'll put in a diesel. It'll have a straight pipe, raincap, and the diesel pump cranked WAAAAAY up...
