  • Homebuilt kinda extreme....Am I crazy?

    Little about myself,
I own a construction company near seattle I have many pieces of heavy equipment and as such can maintain and repair most things.
I live on acreage with a good size stream on one side forest service on one side and a old closed gravel pit on the third....also have a huge muckey area from a beaver damn very close. some very steep wooded trails. Till I got married I drove dirtbikes all over the place now married with 2 young kids I have 2 dunebuggies, but they still lack come ability that I would like. So I started thinking about making something that could go anywhere and bring my family with me....dident need to be fast but streams wetlands and hill ability would be needed. SO i headed to google like usual for me to see how other people have handed these needs and low and behold I found this site. I have a donar vehicle that I think has alot of parts that would make something overbuilt and overkill. So lets get started I will tell you guys what im thinking about and you can offer ideas on what problems I will have since I have not started yet.
I have a one of a kind prototype skidsteer (wheels with steel tracks) log skidder made by garrit heavy equipment as a test for clearing tight forest areas.
It has a small aircooled hatz diesel a strange transmission mated right on the back of the motor that has 2 hand controls for running the hydraulics to the torque hub wheel motors this entire vehicle is hydraulic driven. the transmission thingy also has outputs for attachments ( in my case front rear blades and winch)
as it sets it is able to reach around 15 mph and while slower it will pull anything...dont think i can make it power out I have hooked up to a large size ecology block on the rear lifted it up and drove off through the woods before...
now this thing is all made out of 1/4 plate steel ways around 4k pounds. I am thinking of using the motor or perhaps a subie around 60hp the transmission and the torque hubs as the prime movers in building a aluminium tub not sure yet how long yet that will take some testing now what do you guys say as 2 what kind of problems ill face?....o ya i want hard attachment points where i can have either snowblower or snowplow on the front and perhaps ill set up three point attachment in the back.......how about building a track system like a larger bulldozer? so i can get 12" ground clearance under the tub and more suspension...
I have watched many videos of 6x6 and 8x8 in mud and would like to avoid the need to bounce around like im possesed to keep it moving. I dont need speed in water but with the torque I have increasing the ratio to get more speed will not be a problem at all.....Open up guys tell me what you think.

It sounds like a great idea I'm just trying to figure out what it's going to take to float 4 thousand pounds that's a lot of weight. I think most amphids on the heavy side are under 1500 pounds. I'm sure it can be done just trying to think up the best way to go about it.

I guess you need to figure out what you want it to do. Then build around that. do you want a 4 seater? 6-8 wheels or tracks? how long how wide. Steel frame with an alum. tub? powered thru the water? The PTO definately sounds good for water propulsion
with a prop or pump. Whats the HP and torq? and the weight of all your going to use from this diesel machine?
