  • Sierra Trail Boss Motor Swap--any suggestions???

    Hello all,
I have a trail boss with the 290 jlo 2 stroke that I want to swap with some type of 4 stroke Briggs style motor. What I don't know is what size I would need and also what type of clutch is needed? I've found a 11hp koehler with electric start and a 1 inch crank shaft. I'm not sure if that's enough power? Any help would be great, also where and what type of clutch I will need! Thank you!

P.S. anyone looking for a stock motor, I have one to sell, I live in Ohio.

If you gotta buy a motor shaffer, i'd go with the 16hp chinese knockoffs from ebay or harbor freight. alot of ppl swear by them. they have a 1" shaft as well. also, find yourself a good 4stroke clutch with a matching ID bore. After that you'll play some games to find the right belt size, however there's a billion diff kinds out there. as for clutch's, i boutght a duster 94c from ebay, it was on sell when i bought it, right around 200 bills.

as for stock motor, ill point someone in your direction looking for one...

      Thanks mustang for the help.
      Has
anyone heard of running a belt right to the jack shaft and getting rid of the centrificul clutch? In other words from the motor pulley run a belt right back where it was going just eliminate the centrificul clutch?

The clutch is what creates gearing. It would be like having an 18 speed mountain bike and choosing only 1 gear to use no matter where you are riding.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

Shaffer; You are going the same route that I took a few years ago when I converted my t-boss from the (Sachs) to what I now have as a 16 hp Briggs. First off; the conversion isn't that complicated. You will have to make/install a simple plate to mount to the frame. (No engieering involved with it either, which is cool.) Second; If you are going with the Briggs, use a minimum of 16 HP. (The 16 is working great for me to-date for what I use my T-boss for!) Also, 11hp is going to be too weak to efficiently power the two seperate trannies. Factory specs rated the (2-Stroke) motor at 20hp; But as I have experienced since my conversion, 16 hp is working fine. 16-18 hp are the same size dimension-wise. 3rd; You will DEFINATELY have to get a new drive clutch that is set for a 4-stroke motor. 4; From there you move on to the belt length that one other member mentioned. Depending on how you get your new motor to comfortably sit under the top shell will decide the belt length. A bit of trial-and-error will come into effect here. At 40-50 bux a pop for belts, you don't want to "Guess" too many times. 5; You will also have to modify your exhaust system. Obviousely; converting to a muffler for the Briggs, and "Piping" the manifold to it and exiting the chassis. Which again; isn't too complicated thanks to the invention of "FLEX-PIPE"! If you care to go over details, you can call me at 414-940-4591 (CST) and I can further help you. If I don't answer, just leave a message specifying your interest in the t-boss conversion. I WILL respond! I really enjoy this site and being able to help others with situations regarding the t-boss, as it is not one of the most popular 6x6's out there, yet few still persue to keep it alive...............................Jeff
