  • Terra Tiger Project: Looking for advice on clutch relining, tires, alternator mod

    Hi there,

My dad had purchased this Terra Tiger when I was young. I am in the process of fixing it up and would like to make some upgrades and continuing modifications.
The machine is in pretty good shape overall. My dad geared it down where it will climb over anything that gets in its way and put a mechanical reverse system in which works really well.

At this point, my biggest problem is the clutches need to be relined. Has anyone ever done this themselves? I am wondering if any of the friction material available at McMaster Carr will work?

    McMaster-Carr

I also need to get new tires and drive chains. Any recommendations on cheap tires? The current tires have been converted to 22-11-8.

I also am thinking about adding a charging system to the engine, leaning towards an alternator. How much hp would an alternator take from my engine and are there any recommendations for an alternator? I am thinking a simple 1-wire alternator.

    Here is my machine:

Thanks for any information and advice!

friction_material_template_for_tt.jpgWow, it sounds like mechanical aptitude runs in your family. I'm not sure what friction material to recomend, but I would go for the most friction. TT's had the problem of clutch slipping, the fix was to add shims to the springs making the tension higher. If your springs have weakened (from age) you can replace them with valve springs from a local race shop (approx 200 #).

Carlisle AT-101 tires are probably your best bet(approx $50 ea.), but again the weak clutches may be affected by the extra grip of the aggressive tread.
Buy the best chain you can find, American made Diamond brand is what I would look for.

The alternator is a good idea, IF you can squeeze it in there, It will take about 1 hp to run, but only when charging. When the battery is full, the draw will be minimal.

Post up some pictures of the mechanical reverse system, I'm very curious how it works.
I put an electric reverse in mine by adding a car flywheel and starter to the main shaft.
It worked well enough for backing off a trailer or out of the garage, but thats about it.

      Thanks for the advice!

Would you happen to have an idea of how to attach the friction material? Any recommended adhesives?

I will get a picture of the reverse mechanism in a couple weeks. I am up at school now and have to wait until I finish for the semester to work on the machine.

This is the stuff I used from McMaster Carr:

        6224K122 High-Strength Brake and Clutch Lining, 3/16"
        Thickness, 3" Width, 3' Length

I used JB Weld to attach the material to the clutch drum.

Here is picture of how they turned out.

I Don't have the machine back together yet so I can't report how well they work.

        Hope this helps.
