  • F N R gearbox

Heres a F N R gearbox I have that Im thinking about trying to mount in the terra tiger. Im thinking I could mount the engine in back so Id get more leg room. I could run a shaft up the center and to this gearbox. Then drive the drivetrain off it.

My first concern would be weight? It looks pretty heavy but maybe its not. The rear engine idea sounds cool! Whats the fnr gearbox out of? Looks like a transaxle out of a 4 wheel steering Garden/lawn tractor?

Im thinking Id cut its down, it is heavy, probably 80lbs but most of that weight Id guess is in the cast iron. This is a rear end out of a 4 wheel steer lawn tractor. I think I can cut the axles down and cut a key in the axle shaft and put a sprocket on it.

Looks like to much work! I've thought about using (a bad word China made) rear 4wheeler axle that has forward and reverse and mount driven clutch where sprocket fits, But it too would still require a bunch of machine work to get clutches and such to fit. Would probably be easier to fit a t20 up front? I would love to run across a hydro zero turn mower drive system cheap!!!!! to try hydro motors on one. But afraind it wouldn't run fast enough for me?

Some of those zero turn mowers will mow quick so I think a transmission out of one would have the power and speed but then you have the weight and size issue. Most of those have big engines. Ive been doing some measuring for a 4 stroke and the terra tiger is really tight on space.

T-20s seem to be hard to find and expensive. My terra tiger needs to be completely gone through so I need to pull the drive train out anyways.

Heres where its at now, Id guess about 35lbs. Looks like I can mount it up front right behind the head lamp. Only problem is finding a place for brackets to hold it.

Does that have a diff in it or is it straight through?

its a diff, so its like a 90 degree gearbox too which would allow me to mount the engine in the rear. Id have to gear it up a lot.

So are you using the diff or locking it and putting the cone clutches on the axles shafts? If you are using it, dont gear it up from the diff to the terra tiger axles. Gear it up from the engine to the gearbox. This way the whole gear box is spinning faster. If you gear it up from the trans axle to the terra tiger axles it would put a lot of torque into the gear box and probably will end up eating the spiders gears or something. You would be multiplying the torque load to the gearbox. Spinning it faster might cause lube/heating issues too though. I assume it runs gear oil? I dont know if running a ligher oil would be better or not or if gear oil is good enough. Id probably stick with whats in it. But I would keep an eye on the temperature at least.

I was going to gear it up on both ends and probably run a little thinner oil. I heard these things were fast and Id like to gear it down some. Id rather do like you said and speed up in input but Im afraid of over speeding the gearbox. I think its 24:1
