I was in the bearing place a couple weeks ago and was talking to a guy about 6 wheelers. He said when he was in vietnam he used a 6 wheeled stick steer vehicle to go into the swamps to retrieve soldiers that would hold about 10 men.Any one know any thing about what type of 6 wheeler he was talking about?

LTV kid is a 8x8 and wasnt a military vehicle, it is a amphibious tractor. I think it was probably a gamma goat, but its not skid steer.

I guess it could be a Gamma Goat, also made by the LTV Corporation. There were a few still around in the Army in the late 1980's when I did my military servitude. Most who ever saw a Gamma Goat would never mistake it for anything else due to its extremely loud Detroit diesel 2 stroke engine. It was amphibious but had its issues: poor serviceability, terrible handling, deafening loudness, etc., Now if someone could pick one up and convert it to a 4 cycle engine, that might be the ticket.

According to the kid history it sounds like the military did get some near the end of the war to test.He was probably one of the people who got to test these machines.

I do remember the goats.. I remember turning them in to get brand new humvee's back in 1989 when I was stationed at Ft. Ord, CA. We where so happy to get rid of the goats, especially the maintenance platoon! We later found ours had been turned into targets on the mortar range.

When i was young we put 5 on a quad on a regular basis so 10 on a kid should be no sweat. Although we did kind of resemble that scene from garbage pale kids.

I've done the same thing, but the difference is that everyone is holding on. We're talking wounded men, who may or may not be conscious and capable of holding on. Who knows, maybe they just put sideboards on it and piled 'em on there...

The goat was all that i remember other than the Mule but it had 4 tires and a steering wheel Note: great machine. With the Gama Goat you were not going to be sneaking up on anyone or come in silent. Drivers had to wear double hearing protection so they would not go deaf. This was not a macho thing the noise was so deafening you would have a terrible headache almost instantly. Add the heat in the back with smoke from the diesel, it was a real party. We did use them in the Marines but i hated to be near them.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"
