Is there anyway to be alerted when someone posts on a post you have also posted on or be alerted when somebody posts on a thread you started? Maybe I'm missing something easy.

There is. You can subscribe to a single thread or an entire forum if you like. At the top of a thread (this one for example) there is a drop down menu that is called "Thread Tools". Pull it down and select "Subscribe to Thread". You can do the same thing for a forum if you click on the forum. At the top, that menu will be called "Forum Tools" and you would "Subscribe to Forum".
