What is the purpose of the spring linkage on t20?

My 950 has that. It allows me to lock the F-N-R lever in the forward or reverse position, then give it a little gas and bump the laterals it will pop into gear. If all the guts of the T20 are perfectly lined up (which they seldom are), it will go into gear without activating the springs. This is particularly handy if I'm bogged down in the mud and can't rock the machine.
