He is holding the snake up towards the camera to give the illusion of length. That is about a 4 1/2 foot snake. It is a healthy one, but by no means huge,

Agreed. And the 2/5ths scale F150 in the background, the Dwarf holding the snake, and the clever use of a macroscopic lens make it look even bigger.

30 years ago when I lived in southern Calif. my wife and I liked to drive on route 2 into the san gabriel mountains. We would stop at this little coffee shop diner for lunch, on the wall was a picture from the 1950s of a rattler skin it was hung out a 2nd story window so you could see it. I remember the hand written caption of it being 10' 4" even though its been 30 or so years you don"t forget something like that.
