  • Llama Burgers

I like to trap snapping turtles around here in the summer. Last summer one of the guys my buddies and I were trapping on asked us if we wanted a llama. Never being ones to turn down food we accepted. This was a big mature male llama that was picking on his younger male and the land owner wanted it gone. We told him we were going to butcher it and he said as long as it was out of his hair he was fine with it.

If any of you ever get a chance to eat llama, don't pass it up. the meat is so mild it works well for just about anything. Burgers, chili, spaghetti sauce, omlettes, and stir fry, just to name a few.

Does it's taste compare to anything? beef, elk, chicken?

This was a big, mature male that was 7 ft tall and probably weighed 250-275 lbs on the hoof. I'd guesstimate we got about 100-125 lbs of boned out meat. I made burger out of all of mine except for the one backstrap. I cut it into inch thick steaks. I'd say as far as taste goes, it's so mild it tastes like whatever you cook it with. The texture is like beef, but it might be a little tougher. Like I said, this was a mature male.
