  • Life Saving Tricks...

There are a lot of books, videos and guru s out there that will gladly show you how to survive if you find yourself alone in the bush. There is usually some cost involved and no real great ideas come out.
I was on a moose hunt with a camp and the weather was hot..... now in Northern Ontario we usually get snow sometime during the hunt, but on this hunt it was +20 C outside. The mosquitoes and flies were horrible. We dreaded the thought of getting a moose and having to dress it out in this environment. At my appointed time, I went to a spot to retrieve a hunter. When I got there, I could see him in the bush but I could not see his head......that happens.... but even as he walked closer, I still could not make out his head..... its like he had nothing above the neck..... It is when he got closer that I saw what he had done. As we sometimes find ourselves in the bush without bug spray....he had peeled a strip of birch bark about 12 in. high with a circumference of about 10 inches. To this he had added two eye holes and he had slipped the bark over his head..... Flies stay away from the bark.... I don't expect anyone to carve out a mask everytime you are in the bush, but I do think that this idea would work in an emergency.

    Any other tricks out there....
