Hi All
I have a 13 year old troy built CS20 string strimmer. It started running a little rough today, sometimes it would start easy like normal then sometimes it would just not start no matter how many time I pulled it. then all of a sudden it would start.

I removed the plug and noticed that when the piston is at bottom I have a ton of play on the crank (radial) before the piston starts to move up. the spark is good and blue.

Is it possible my piston rod and or crank has a ton of play and my timing is now off?

make sure there are no obstructions in the muffler. try running without it. Not sure if older ones had baffles but the newer ones are always plugging up with carbon.

Did you lose all compression??

Compression is still good, It will not start, even when I spray starting fluid in the carb it will not ignite. but spark is good and blue

Toss it and go get a new one.

I am having a similar problem with a Stiehl model. I strongly suspect a clogged fuel line, but since you tried starter fluid, and got no response with verified spark, I'm not sure. I need to find time to disassemble mine to fix it, but I keep procrastinating.

I've got a Stihl brush cutter that refuses to start on starting fluid either. But then I've heard that Stihl products in general are hard to start.

Clearly my spelling needs a bit of work, but both my Stihl weed whacker and chainsaw are equipped with easy start. The chainsaw actually starts after the rope returns. The weed whacker started acting up last year. It is possibly the carburetor, with something gumming up a needle valve. The fuel is old, and a good cleaning will certainly do some good.

tore it down and the piston and jug is scored bad and rings are bad. compression was there but not good enough, going in the trash, can buy a new one for 20.00 more than all parts to fix
