  • Communications while out n about?

Ok so being a license Amateur radio or HAM operator, I know the value in good solid communications. Especially when away from (Cough) cell service which when Shhhh it hits the fan we all know goes for nadda chance to get through.

So what all do you people use while out in yer rigs to communicate?

I have just recently found this sweet little Yaesu FTM-10R mobile 2M rig. Welcome to Yaesu.com

I think being that it is water tight it would be ideal for our rigs. That is ideal for outdoors men and SAR and what not.

Personally I have a few radios and HT or handi talkies that are very useful while out and about. My big issue with mounting a radio in my Muscateer would be the lack of a Ground Plane for an antenna which I will be working on you can be assured.

So What all do you use?
    MUSCATEER 6x6
    Kubota 14hp 2cyl diesel engine, Hagen/Rooter transmission Comet 780 Drive/770 Driven 22x12x8 Bearclaw tyres
Soon to add on a ... RHB31 Turbo..guess that would make it a
    MUSCA TUR BOTA then eh?

90 Bronco..awaiting a rebuild like no other = Tons and turbo diesel

I use Kenwood UHF TK-350 handheld radios around the house for communications and I've seriously considered installing in my argo, a TK-805D that I have on the shelf here. I pondered the same question you did about grounding the antenna. If you figure out a good method, please share with us.

You can use aluminum tape for a ground plane. Usually used for duct work, but works great as a ground pane

Consider a 'SPOT' Satellite messenger. Great because you can send OK messages, Help (non-life threatening...like dead battery on truck) or 911 messages.
I haven't found a place it hasn't worked for me yet. And I've used it from car, boat, and aircraft.

Only drawback is no one can contact you with it. But great for worrying spouses and family when you 3 hours late checking in.
