Go to Tractor Supply or a small engine shop and they should be able to get you fixed up.

There's nothing wrong with them, it's how we have trained them and how we have set them up.

Everything is computerized now. Inventory, parts lists etc. There's only one way to look something up and that's to drill down through the menu's on the computer. They're not taught anything else and the parts counter job is so transient (ie; low pay and low trained) they don't stick around long enough to learn anything more than the computer.

Saying something like "Ford solenoid" doesn't help either. There's more than a couple dozen "Ford solenoids" that could apply to that.

You need to tell the kid behind the counter something like "1978 Ford Thunderbird, 302, Automatic, starter solenoid" and he'll find the Ford Solenoid you're looking for (if that's what you need).

Not the kids fault, we've set them up to fail if having to do anything outside of the "stovepipe" we've forced them into.....

Believe me I am also frustrated with the lack of real knowledge prevalent in the retail industry.
All they really know is how to use the electronic catalogue and can barely handle that task but what do you want from a minimum wage employee.

However you didn't help yourself out by using the wrong termanology for that particular part.
What you where looking for was a starter Relay not a solenoid.

. A starter relay consists of a coil of wire wound around a ferrous core and an armature on one end of the coil. The amateur connects to a switch consisting of two contacts made from the highly conducting material. On the side is a spring. The spring controls the armature and, therefore, the closing and opening of the switch.

          Solenoid

On the other hand, a starter solenoid is a coil enclosing a movable plunger. Unlike in the starter relay where the coil core is immovable, the core in the starter solenoid is an iron or steel plunger free to move in and out of the coil. The steel plunger is connected to spring at one end. The coil, the spring and a part of the plunger are encased. The other part of the plunger comes out of the casing to provide movement to an outside connection.
