  • Video File Conversion .mov to .avi

I have some video taken by a friend that is in a .mov format. I can't export it into Windows Movie Maker to edit and take some snapshots because Movie Maker does not support the .mov file which is a Quicktime video. I want to convert .mov to .avi to export the video into Movie Maker. I tried some of the freeware available but the convertor I tried placed a watermark in the center of the video that obstructs the view. It can't be removed unless you register and actually pay for the software. I don't want to buy the software just for the one time I need to convert the file. Some of the other freeware may contain spyware or worse but I don't know. The video has captured a couple of air buds that I would like to "snapshot" . Any suggestions from someone who has done this? The .mov file is to large to e-mail.

We had a similar problem when we did the Pine Lake Teaser video. Even though Windows Movie Maker said it would take an .AVI file, it would not. After we got the clips on an .AVI file, Windows Movie Maker would not let us import it, so we had to convert the .AVI file to a .WMV file. It took forever. It was such a nightmare, we don't even remember which program we used to get it converted to a .WMV file. I know this doesn't help much, but I hate to see you convert to an .AVI file & it still not be able to import to Windows Movie Maker. If anyone has a simple program, please let us ALL know. It's tuff when your not a computer geek.

        argohunter ,

I down loaded a free trial version of " MOVAVI Video 6 ". The program will convert lots of different video formats. I was " so impressed " with the ease of converting one video file to another, that I finally decided to buy the full program. It cost me $59.95 when I bought it,, but, you can find it on sale on the web. Down load the free trial version to see how you like it.

The " free down load verson " of MOVAVI Video 6 has a " water mark " that appear every five seconds on any video file you convert. Its super easy to use,and the best one I,ve found so far. Its so much easier than using Windows Movie Maker, that once you try it , you,ll wonder why you ever used it in the first place.

You can download videos from the internet from websites like YouTUbe using the Movavi VideoSuite 6. You can convert the video while it is being downloaded! There are presets for iPod, iPhone, PSP, Zune, PDA, cell phones, and other devices. You can save soundtracks from the video to any audio format you choose. Listen to them offline. We recommend copying them onto a pen drive and plugging them into your car stereo or coping them via bluetooth to your MP3 player or iPod/iPhone.

The video conversion capability of this software includes dealing with High Definition video. You can edit videos on the timeline, insert transitions, add sound and custom text titles.

You can apply artistic and special effects to the video footage and also create slideshows with this software. You can convert video from and to HD formats.

You can burn audio/video CDs from files. Burn audio CDs from MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC, or OGG audio files. You can create data CDs and DVDs with any content. You can verify that it's been recorded, within the program itself! You can create ISO images of any unprotected CDs and DVDs. You can compile new CDs and DVDs and save them in ISO format for burning later.

The conversion capability of Movavi VideoSuite 6 is very versatile. With this software you can:

        Convert Video to iPod
        Convert DVD to iPod
        Convert Video to iPhone
        Convert DVD to iPhone
        Convert Video to Apple TV
        Convert Video to PSP
        Convert DVD to PSP
        Convert Video to Zune
        Convert Video to MP4
        Convert DVD to MP4
        Convert Video to 3GP
        Convert AVI Video
        You can also Rip DVDs

When recording videos you can specify the quality and output file size without too much of an effort. This saves you from all the technical headaches if you're not as tech savvy. The editing tools of Movavi let you split, crop, merge, rotate and add watermarks. This makes the Movavi VideoSuite 6 perfect for making anything from ad films and corporate presentations to short films and screencasts. In fact it's so inexpensive you can probably buy it even for home videos and make everyone go green when you show them the videos!

You can record narrations to go with screecasts and also improve the quality of your video with artistic filters. You can record custom soundtracks to go with the video. Movavi VideoSuite6 lets you capture High Definition video from HD MiniDV video camcorders, a new feature that adds value to this software program.

You can record from you webcam and save the video to your hard disk - play back to view the video immediately. Splitting the video footage is easier. You can choose the split location by size, time and duration or manually. You can join selected video segments quickly and easily. You can cut out any ad commercials you don't want in just a click or two.

Movavi VideoSuite 6 supports several input video formats including:

AVI (including DivX, XviD, MJPEG, and other codecs), DV AVI, MPEG 1,2, MP4 (including H.263, H.264, and other codecs), Windows Media Video (WMV, ASF), 3GP (3GPP, 3GPP2), QuickTime (MOV, QT), DVD (VOB, IFO), MOD, DAT (VCD, SVCD),M2T, MTS, MKV, VRO, Flash (FLV).

I've not run into any problems using Pinnacle Studio. I have version 10. I like it a lot. They're up to 12 now. The reviews for 12 indicate it's a little quirky but I think all the versions started out that way and eventually get patched up.

Argohunter, if all you want is screenshots, and you can play the .mov on your computer, you might be able to capture with the print screen key. Another idea is rename the file extension .mov to .mpeg or .mpg, worked for me.. played the mpeg on software dvd player and captured that way.

Ideally we edit in the file format it's already in. Converting, compressing, dumping a bunch of stuff into a timeline with special effects, titles, fades.. that all has to be re encoded. All these steps degrade the picture.

Bill Gates likes you to buy every POS operating system he can cobble together, but he like to keep his software proprietary, ie WMV (windows media). There's no one answer for everyone, but there is generally free software that will do the job you want. It takes time to figure it out.

I upgraded to Pinnacle 12 after having problems with saving a full video, it always seemed to loose part of the video in random places. Problem still exists and could be a camera frame rate issue. Lots of neat features with pinnacle. Every extra is cost plus,no free upgrades with Pinnacle.

                  Sony Vegas Pro 8

I just got Sony Vegas Pro 8, reviews were pretty good, but cost $$. I also have Pinnacle 12 and Nero Ultra 7, each have their pro's/con's. I use Pinnacle Movie Box to capture a bunch of VHS and tape stuff works well.

                    I like Prism..

A free .mov editor is what I'd be looking for..

Everything I edit is already a dvd, and I don't use movie maker, so I don't have an answer for you guys.

Argohunter, there are free .mov players for download, maybe play and capture with one..

                      Thank You Everyone

Each one of you gave me leads to follow and those leads helped me get the file conversion acomplished. Collectively, all of you helped solve this for me. What a great response from a bunch of great people. I may have eventually figured it out on my own but it would have taken me a lot longer....days, weeks, months to get it done.

                      A Big Thanks to All
