why do septic systems always malfunction on weekends?even worse for me is a winter weekend.i just finished shoveling the snow off the tank and dug up the lids.now i gotta find a disposal guy for tomorrow.what a pain in da buttocks.

That sucks. Did you put a high level alarm on the tank to let you know if it failed? -

Mine is a cement tank built in the 60's. Roots get in around the pipes and It gets root bound about twice a year (no matter how often I put root killer in). I've gotten to where I can dig it up, and clean out the inlet pipe with a tool I built from chimney sweeping poles and have it covered back up in about 45 minutes. I have the same high level alarm as Plott Hound. Pretty sad that one of my "big dreams" in life is to have enough money to get the septic replaced

Hey, you have the same alm system that I have.
Seriously though, mine is a PITA, No Cleanouts, and only about a 2" access to the tank. I'm pretty sure there was a code that was NOT met when my system was installed
Good thing that the local Septic Sucking Service gives homeowners a break

we replaced our about 4 years a go it's a pain our was running on top of thre ground . new tank and lines our old one was hand layed brick with grout smeared on it . . now we have 2 big green lids stiicking up out of the ground

Split tank, with a wier, one lid over the "Solids", and one lid over the "Liquid" side of the tank??. Waste flows to the tank into the "Solids" side, and liquid flows over the wier to the liquid side. Fun. We had lots of grief with ours last year, seems to be good now. Ours is a 2 compartment system like Rd describes. When ours was installed years ago someone neglected to drill a hole in the bottom of the discharge elbow. The discharge line would not drain back and the line would freeze. Crawled in the hatch this fall, drilled a hole, replaces the lid and slapped it in the a$$. Same alarm as everyone else, been meaning to install a true high water alarm, but it never crosses my mind until it's backed up and causing grief again. Should be good until spring now. What's this filter everyone is talking about?Comment

Yeah.. a high level alarm is pretty critical. More so if you have a lift pump instead of siphon drain - back up into the house? yuck!
PS - and not that it matters, but the incoming "water" is called inffluent and the outgoing effluent. Your first tank in the process line is where the solids either float to the top or fall to the bottom (or break apart).. bacteria help break down the solids (this tank is also called the digestor), the second tank takes the middle water from the first tank which has been filtered by the sedimentation process. The second tank is really just a buffer tank so that you can discharge a bunch of effluent at once instead of having it trickle down to the field/pond where it could freeze in the pipe.Comment
