    Above is the link to Amazon for my welder I already offered for my xmas present from my folks. I've been wanting to learn the skill for a while, but everyone has discouraged me from buying el cheapo harbor freight onecomplaining it is only good for bugger welds and not worth the money. mustangwagz was cool enough to check the specs on this one for me and said it seemed like the deal to get. Amazon lists only 5 left for sale. If anyone else needs one you might have to jump on it. 75% off doesn't happen a lot on things I need.

    A couple things I would look at before buying......The flux core wire is not as "user friendly" as using a shielding gas, so make sure you can upgrade to a tank as funds allow.
    Also the spool gun looks inconvenient, I've seen that for aluminum but a regular gun for steel...is this one that way? A lot of spots are tight, and a big gun may not work well.
    I'll probably make you mad, but I only paid $450 for mine used. Sometimes you have to be in the right place at the right time....and have enough cash in your pocket.

    The 160 amp is the smallest I'd buy. It's still hard to do big stuff. My buddy has a 250 and his is GREAT! Making multiple passes with a small one is just not as good.

      It is gas upgradable and will be done rather quickly. that was important to me because only because others have told me so. I'm not looking to build tanks or anything. I just needed to learn and like having my own tools. for brand new and the price I think it will be a good first welder but maybe I will hate it. At least it will let me practice.

        I think you'll do just fine. Like buggyman said, flux-core will take time, and as you and i talked about, you'll have to gather scrap and practice...thats a given like you said. lol The spool gun Can be bulky at times, but ive used a spool gun for steel numerous times and rarly run into problems. usually only when i'm welding inside the frame of my bronco or when im doing exhaust. ive seen other times as well, but hey...we live, we learn..and if it comes down to it...haul it to my house. lol or illl haul my welder up there. hahahaha.

          Congrats on your new welder present! I personally like the good ole lincoln buzz box. But thats just because its what I have and know how to use. Once you learn yours you will love it. When something rips breaks or cracks its not such a big deal as it use to be before the welder.

            Larry, compare a mig to switching from 6011 rod to 7018. It makes a bad welder like me look good. LOL
