  • Strange encounter today

Maybe I'm just getting a little paranoid, but here it is

I went down the Logging road north of town (Yellow Gates), toward the Mill, to see if I could find some firewood. Stopped on the other side of the 11km marker. Turned my truck around, got out for a look around, not much of interest to me, jumped back in the truck and checked my cell for messages. I saw a truck coming towards me (from the Highway). Truck stopped beside mine, my window was half open. Truck was Gray, smaller than mine, but a crewcab, dirty, may have been a chev or dodge. Driver seemed lost, nervous, asked me if there was a Rig working down the road (There are NO rig signs on this road in that direction that I know of). I replied "Not that I know of, but I didn't go to the end, I just turned around here". Driver offered me 20$ to drive him to town to get a part for his truck, he said he didn't trust it on the highway. (Right about here my gut is telling me "Something is wrong here". He's willing to drive down a bush road, but not the paved highway, and we are less than 10 miles from town)
I asked him what he needs, and he said "A part for my truck" I will give you 20$ to drive me to town and back out here, I'll leave this truck here". I said turn it around, and drive it to the highway, and I'll take you from there" His eyes are a little wide, and he replies that he will turn around and drive to the road. As I drove out to the highway, he fell behind 2 times, to the point where I thought his truck had, in fact, quite. I slowed down and watched, but did not stop. The second time he fell behind, I rounded a corner and lost sight of him, I kept rolling slowly forward and when I glaced back a moment later he was right behind me. He had to have put of quite a burst of speed to do that, then he slowed down again. I reached the highway well ahead of him (At no time did I excede 25-30kmh), and had decided that I would tell him that I didn't have time to return him to his truck if he left it here. I would instead follow him to town and ensure that he got there safely. I stopped my truck close to the highway, on the left side of the road, thinking that he would pull up on my right to leave his truck.
I got out to talk to him, but he stopped WELL back on the narrow, single lane part of the road (maybe 40yrds behind me). I stood there for a long moment. He just sat there (there we a couple vehicles going by on the highway). I walked closer to his truck, watching him as I closed the distance. When I was about 5yrds from his truck, I stopped and waited for him to exit (A bunch of vehicles are now passing by on the highway, both directions). The drivers eyes are wide, he's figiting with something on the seat/console to his right, his eyes are darting left and right, he's looking left and right, eyes still wide and darting, I could see the whites plainly from my position. He's still figiting with something beside him. (Something is wrong here, what is he doing? Why is it taking so long to get out of the truck? Why did he stop there, it's a stupid place to leave a truck? Why am I so far from my truck? Why won't he look at me? Why are his eyes darting around? Why does he appear so nervous?)
Most of the vehicles are out of sight now and I can see a long ways down the road. I turn and start walking back toward my truck, keeping my head turned to the right, just enough to see if Drivers door or window start to open (Not sure what I'm expecting here, but something still feels very wrong)
I decide to go with my gut (If the guy is really in trouble, I got him to the road and he can find a ride if needed), I get in my truck and drop it in Drive, cross the highway, keeping to the Logging road, and head toward the Old Highway. At the intersection of the Old Highway (maybe 700M) I see in my mirror that Driver is crossing the Highway (following me?). I turn toward town on the old highway, just ahead of me is an Access Road that parallels the old highway, and connects to the Golf Course Road. I pull in there and wait to see if he IS following, or if he had just pulled onto the highway to go to town........... Nope, there he is, pulling up to the intersection.
So now I'm more than a little "creaped out", so I decide to loose him (If he is, in fact, chasing me). As I pulled up to the intersection on the Golf Course Rd, I see him coming in my rear view. Now, the ONLY way I could see him gaining on me that much, in that distance, would be if he was traveling in excess of 160kmh. So, for some reason I turn toward the golf course, and fly down the straight stretch and see him turn toward me as I go around the corner, where I loose sight of him. While he is out of sight, I pull into a friends driveway, where my truck will be out of sight behind some trees.
I see Drivers truck flash by through the trees, as I walk to my buddies door. My friends Rottie greets me on the sidewalk, I knock and enter. Friends wife greets me and takes me in to have a fresh baked bun with her and the grandson, and to check out some "Quilting" she was working on. We talk and shortly I see Drivers Truck, through the kitchen window, flash past on the road headed back toward the highway (NOT 100% sure on this, it was through the trees after all, but a more open section of trees than where my truck was parked). I never did have that bun, I was a little distracted and wondering if I was over-reacting, not sure if she noticed or not. I left my buddies house a few minutes later (He was not home).
Never saw the Truck/Driver again, and made my way home thinking "Did that just happen the way I think it did?"
So, now I'm trying to remember what Driver looked like........ This is something I'm not good at, I never bother to take in a persons features or details (I tend to take in details around a person, more than details of the person) . Top that with the fact that I had just taken my glasses off the first time he pulled up to me. (I removed them to see my Cell Phone better. My glasses go very dark in the sun, I had my window open, and had been outside the truck for a few minutes before he pulled up. It's easier to see the phone display without the glasses.)
So, he had yellow stained teeth, short dark, (dirty/greasy) hair, he was slight of build, figity. He had no glasses.
The next time I saw him, was through the window of his truck when we were stopped at the highway. As mentioned, I was about 5yrd in front of his truck, and the only features I recall are the whites of his eyes and the way he kept darting looks up and down the highway, the way he kept glancing down at something to his right and figiting.
The truck was dirty, do not recall looking away from the Driver long enough to see a Licence Plate, let alone notice if it was a BC plate or not.
The truck was a 4x4, I remember seeing one front tire slip when he made his 50 point turn behind my truck at the first encounter.

So, that's my wierd encounter for the day
    How was yours?

sounds like he was up to no good........ Always got to go with your gut feeling I owned a taxi fleet for 12 years and had a lot of creepy situations and you need to use your survival instinct. Also you should report it incase he tries that with other people the cops will have multiple reports of this guy and take it serious next time it could be someone you love.

Have to agree here...Something do not sound right....Should report it to your local RCMP....They can check to see if something like this has been reported before...What if this creep aproached a child asking for directions or something else....You were lucky to have a friends place that you could go to....Do not want to think what could have happened if you had had given him a ride....Good instinct to go with the "gut feeling"...Take care out there....there are a lot of greeps up to no good...
Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.

Ok I'm totally creeped out by this story!

I was thinking maybe he was heading down that road to bury..gulp...something and didn't expect to see you there. The nervous nonsensical conversation may have been a distraction until he figured out what to do with the unexpected witness (you)
              Good instincts RD!!!!

Just got a reply back from my brother, he here is his reply

Holy crap.... that totally matches the description of a guy wanted for two murders that we thought might have been heading north.

Kidding.... too bad you didn't get a plate, but good choice to listen to your gut and get away from him. In my opinion, drugs are bad.

This was an encounter with what I like to call "A Zombie". Not to be confused with the slow moving zombies of the 50's and 60's, but a quick moving zombie of the 21st century.

This guy was probably on a crack or meth binge. The strange behaviour (figiting , paranoia, nervous, thinking something wrong with his truck, etc) are all symptoms of drug paranoia. Or maybe he just wanted a new truck.

If you do see him again, try and get a plate and report it locally (and call me). Tell the person you report it to that your brother is a member and you want to report it for information only. It is probably nothing, but if something similar occurs.... we don't believe in coincidences at the cop shop. Act accordingly.... you know what I mean.

My day was filled with boring cleaning and getting the house ready to sell. Nothing strange (except that I was cleaning) going on here.

                Have a good night.

my two cents: Some poor schmuck that just took some crystal meth and was tripping. I had a simmilar situation when i was younger. An individual kept on driving up the drive way when i was younger, 16 or so i think way out in the sticks. Any way, it was snowing hard and no place for an idiot to be, he had to follow our tracks in as they were the only ones. As i was talking to him, he keept on fidgiting and scratching his neck, face and arms. Since it was just my mom, grand ma, sister, youger brother out there i told him i was unfamilure with the place and would he mind leading me out to the road so i can buy some milk? he complied and drove out at 5 MPH so i got half a truck lenght behind him and kicked on the KC lights. He took off like a rocket and we were cruising 45 or 50 MPH in the snow. Half way out when he was around a corner i shut the lights and truck off. When i could not hear him any more i went and dropped two lodget pole pines across the road and flagged them hevily with survoros tape (so dad or somone else wouldnt hit them) and whent home. I dont know what happened to him, but he never came back.

From his apperance, in your head was he somone who was abnormaly lacking in hygene? If he was, and if you can recall if he was itching himself a bunch or had some kind of repetative "tick" than yah, weirdo higher than a kite!

take it easy and be safe RD

Our brothers in canada will agree 100% but it is (correct me if im wrong) kind of a pain to do that up there like we do in the USA. And besides, a full can of bear mace will handle 3 out of 4 on your list I know it will jack a snake right up but i dont know about gators.....

it takes some very large stainless steel balls to shot someone with a firearm, and it's something that will stays in your mind for a long time... better be ready to live with the doubts about your decision to shoot. It's easy to be tough with words but there's a reason why cops have extensive psychological support when it happens.

Better carry pepper spray made for bears or a tazer (still illegal in Canada)
